George Virgil Jones

January 30, 1942 — July 20, 2015

George Jones, 73, of Lake Charles, LA died on Monday, July 20, 2015 in a Lafayette hospital. George Virgil Jones, 73, came into the world as a two-and-a-half-pound baby, and through the loving care of his parents grew into a man with a brilliant mind and a humble spirit. He entered into the presence of the Lord on July 20, 2015. George was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, on January 30, 1942, to Edgar Jewel and Myra Ella Jones. He was a graduate of LaGrange High School, Louisiana State University, and McNeese State University, and worked as a chemical engineer in Lake Charles throughout his life. He loved watching all sports and traveling to games with his friends, but his love for football was unmatched. For thirty years, he spent his Friday nights refereeing high school football. George was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, the church he grew up in, and was an active member of Sale Street Baptist Church for fifty years, serving in many capacities, including deacon and Sunday school teacher. A man of strong faith, he was committed to serving God and his community. He modeled his faith in all aspects of his life, and instilled his love of the Lord in his family. While George had many accomplishments in his life, he will be fondly remembered as a faithful and loving husband, father, Paw Paw, and friend. Those left to cherish his memory are his loving and devoted wife of fifty-one years, Connie Cassell Jones; his son, George V. Jones, Jr, and his wife, Lori, of Nashville, Tennessee; his daughter, Leigh Erin, and her husband, David W. Lundy; his sister, Carolyn Faye Jones of Sulphur; his mother-in law, Della Mae Cassell of Lake Charles; sister-in-laws Linda Cassell and Eloise Cassell, both of Lake Charles; and his brother-in-law, Gerald Ruley of Dallas, Texas. Preceding him in death were his parents, Edgar and Myra Jones. George was a proud Paw Paw to his five grandchildren, Ella Perry, Della "Meg" Jones, Jack Jones, George "Gus" Jones, and Jones Lundy. He also had many nieces, nephews, and friends that cherish their time with him. Among those are his football traveling crew, Grady "Buddy" Portie, William "Bill" Stokes, and Dr. Richard "Eddie" Simmons. Services will be at 10:00 AM Thursday, July 23, 2015 at Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at Johnson Funeral Home.
