Albert Herman Wegener

December 28, 1928 — September 1, 2020

“As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.  For I am already being poured as a drink-offering, and the time of my departure has come.  I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”  2 Timothy 4:5-7

It is with great sorrow and deep appreciation that we mourn the loss of a great man, Albert Wegener.  Albert, or Al as everyone knew him, was a kind and selfless man, who will be remembered for his devout faith and loving dedication to his family.  He was called home to Jesus on September 1, 2020.

Al was born to Theo and Adeline Wegener in Lake Charles, Louisiana on December 28, 1928 in the parsonage of St. John Lutheran Church on Ford Street.  One of nine children, Al was baptized into the Christian faith in infancy.  He was taught to nourish his faith through Holy Communion and the Word of God and to love and serve others as testimony for the way Christ loved and served him.

Al was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church where his Father was the Pastor for nearly half a century.  He loved to sing hymns and served the church in many capacities over the years, including Elder and Church President.  He considered the church an extension of his home and its members to be extended family.  He was a gentle, even-tempered, hardworking man of steadfast faith and impeccable character.

After an honorable discharge from the United States Air Force following a tenure cut short by medical problems, Al worked at Citgo Refinery for forty-four years, from 1947 to 1991.  He served on the Board of Directors of CSE Credit Union for over twenty years.

Al enjoyed traveling with his family, toiling around his home, visiting with others, working with wood, and fixing anything broken.  His favorite times in recent years were with his grandchildren, who called him Grosspa, as they played and learned. Al also loved to hunt and fish and instilled a respect for conservation of the environment through example.  He shared in countless wonderful moments and celebrations with family and friends.

Al was a loving father and grandfather, a wonderful provider, a genuine friend, a pillar of the community, and a truly honorable man.  The world is a lesser place without him and he will be dearly missed.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of sixty years, Edna Caroline Hooge Wegener whom he adored with all his heart and soul.  He also leaves his sons, Mark Wegener and Gregory Wegener (Cynthia); his daughter, Mary Ann Jacques (Sean); and his beloved grandchildren Hunter Jacques and Ashton Jacques, who were the lights of his life; his brother, John Wegener (Beth), his sister, Barbara Hellman; and a host of cherished sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Ted, Gitch, and Lawrence; his sisters Adeline, Marie, and Esther; and grandson Greg Wegener.

Graveside services will be at 10:00 AM Saturday, September 12, 2020 at Highland Memory Gardens under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.  Reverend Charles Miller will officiate.

Memorial donations may be made to St. John Lutheran Church, 600 University Drive, Lake Charles, LA 70605.
