Allan H. Glatt, Jr.

February 5, 1924 — January 7, 2013

Allan H. Glatt, 88, passed away at a local nursing care facility on Monday, January 7, 2013.

He was born in Frost, LA on February 5, 1924. In the aftermath of Hurricane Audrey, Allan moved his family to Lake Charles where he became an independent mutual insurance agent. He worked closely with Jules Reinauer and Mose Ableman, but eventually established Glatt Insurance Agency. Because of his extensive knowledge about the insurance industry, he was a much sought-after consultant and leader. He served as the president of the Independent Mutual Agents of Calcasieu, the Louisiana Association of Mutual Insurance Agents and eventually the vice-president of the National Association of Mutual Insurance Agents. These organizations helped shape procedures and insurance standards for the storm ravaged Gulf Coast.

Allan was equally passionate about children and education. He served multiple terms as president of various area Parent Teacher Association (PTA) groups. He served two terms as state PTA president providing strong leadership as schools adapted to educational changes in the 1960s. He was a dedicated community leader. He enjoyed traveling but often said the best part of any trip was coming home and watching the sunset from the Lake Charles Civic Center.

He is survived by his daughter, Betty Jeanne Cayton (Keith); son, Bart Glatt all of Lake Charles; son Tom Glatt, Sr. (Diane) of Las Vegas; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou Glatt; daughter, Karen Glatt; granddaughter, Kelly Glatt, and a daughter-in-law, Renee' Walters Glatt.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, January 11, 2013 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel, 4321 Lake St. Dr. Douglas Ezell will officiate. Burial will follow in Preen Memorial Park Cemetery on Country Club Rd. Visitation will begin on Thursday from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM and will continue on Friday from 8:00 AM until the start of the service.
