Alzina Chavis Bushnell, 92, departed this life at home October 3, 2018 at 7:00pm in Yorktown, Virginia where she lived for the past three and a half years.
Alzina was born on September 15, 1926 in Lake Charles, Louisiana. She was the third of four children to the late Arthur Chavis, Sr. and Marceline Pete Chavis. Alzina was the sister of the great legendary “BooZoo” Chavis. She was a native of Lake Charles, Louisiana for 88 years before moving to Virginia.
Alzina’s legacy as Matriarch of her five living children, seventeen grandchildren, twenty-six great grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren was her greatest accomplishment. She had an unwavering faith in God. She accepted Christ at an early age in her life. She was baptized at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and later became a member of St. Henry Catholic Church. Her love for God and Family was the guiding force in her life. On October 13, 1976 she became a member of the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary #168 in Lake Charles, Louisiana and was active for 42 years.
She was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Sidney J. Bushnell Sr. on October 18, 1941. This union was blessed with seven children. She leaves to cherish her memory, two sons, Lawrence Bushnell (Ashley Cron) of Las Vegas, NV and Sidney Bushnell, Jr. of Lake Charles, LA; three daughters, Linda Polk (George Polk Jr.) of Lake Charles, LA, Marceline Brown, of Houston, TX, and Sharon Biagas (Randy Biagas) of Yorktown, VA; one brother, Wilford (Bob) Chavis; and one sister, Betty Royal Andrus, both of Houston, TX. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband of forty-six years, Sidney Bushnell Sr.; her two young sons, Clarence Bushnell and Roger Bushnell; two grandsons Jeremy Lawrence Bushnell and Justin Charles Brown; her parents Arthur Chavis Sr., and Marceline Pete Chavis; her siblings; William Chavis Sr., Edward Chavis, Wilson (BooZoo) Chavis, Betty J. Chavis, Jimmy Chavis, Arthur Chavis Jr., Joseph Guillory and Rodgas Chavis.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Henry Catholic Church on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at 10 AM. Father Samuel Orsot will officiate. Burial will follow the service in Combre Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Johnson Funeral Home on Friday from 6 PM until 9 PM with a rosary and scripture service to be held at 7 PM. Visitation will resume at the funeral home on Saturday from 9 AM until 9:30 AM.
