Amilcar "Mickey" Torres

September 23, 1930 — February 6, 2021

Amilcar “Mickey” Torres, 90, of Lake Charles passed away at 1:15 AM on Saturday, February 6, 2021 at Villa Maria Retirement Home.

Mr. Torres was born in Lares, Puerto Rico on September 23, 1930.  He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict with the 90th Field Artillery in the 25th Infantry Division.  Mr. Torres was a 1956 graduate of SLI and was an alumni member of ULL Lafayette.  He had a 33-year career with the Louisiana Department of Health and Human Resources where he was a chief sanitarian. 

He was highly involved in the community where he served 4 years with the Calcasieu Parish Planning Authority and was a member of the National Environmental Health Organization and the Louisiana State Environmental Association.  He impacted many young men while coaching and managing baseball teams in the Southside Little League for 18 years.  He is a past member of the LaGrange Band Boosters and was a 40-year member and past president of Club Hispano-Americano.  Mr. Torres ushered for St. Margaret Catholic Church for 40 years.  He was a member of The W.B. Williamson Post #1 American Legion, a past member of the Mardi Gras Krewe des Feteurs, an invested member of the Order of St. Charles, and was a Companion of Honor.

Mr. Torres was a world traveler, a mission traveler with Abrazando Cristo, a sports enthusiast, gardener, and was fond of music and dancing.  He could often be found mall walking.  He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to all.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Rose Guidry Torres of Lake Charles; sons, Joey Torres (Sharon) of Lake Charles, Alex Torres (Pam) of Lake Charles, Mark Torres of Fountain Hills, AZ, and Monsignor Daniel Torres of Lake Charles; grandchildren, Matthew Torres (Martha) of New Orleans, Allison Sonnier (Jude), Mary Kingsley (Evan), and Michael “Mickey” Torres all of Lake Charles; 8 great grandchildren; siblings, Astul Torres, Nelida Soto, Sylvia Nieves, Maritza McLaughlin, and Miriam Marrero all of Puerto Rico; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eloisa and Antonio Torres; and siblings, Andre Torres, Eloisa Ramos, Luisa Soto, Luz Enilda Soto, Arsenio Torres, Anibal Torres, Helen Peniston, and Evalina Girard.

A funeral mass will be held at 3:00 PM on Friday, February 12, 2021 at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church.  His son, Monsignor Daniel Torres, will officiate.  Burial will follow in Consolata Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.  Visitation will begin on Friday in the church from 12:30 PM until the start of the service with a rosary being recited at 2:15 PM.
