Andrew U. “Red” “Pop” Hayes, 90, of Sulphur, LA, died at 1:05 AM on Monday, August 22, 2016 in a local care facility.
Mr. Hayes was born December 3, 1925 in Houston, TX and has lived in Sulphur for the past seventy-two years. He was a 1943 graduate of Oberlin High School, served his country in the U.S. Navy and worked at Firestone as a foreman for thirty-six years. After his retirement, he worked as a driver for Avis Rental, Co. Mr. Hayes was a member of Bellview Baptist Church in Westlake. He was a past president of the Lyons Club and was a member of the Rotary Club and Retreads Motorcycle Group. He was an avid gardener and grew tomatoes and had a wonderful rose garden. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and riding his motorcycle. He enjoyed making motorcycle trips across the state. He also loved animals, music and dancing.
Mr. Hayes is survived by his beloved wife of over seventy-one years, Dora Lee Griffith Hayes of Sulphur, LA; daughter, Carla Hayes Bragg and husband Tom of New Caney, TX; daughter-in-law, Judy Hayes of Westlake, LA; sister, Maudie Sterling of Highlands, TX; grandchildren, Randy Hayes of Rayne, LA, Jesse Bragg and wife Colleen of Humble, TX, Roger Bragg and wife Amanda of Leander, TX, and Kacee Boxley and husband Philip of Humble, TX; and six great-grandchildren, Taylor, Megan, Andrew, William, Jacob, and Nolan.
Mr. Hayes was preceded in death by his son, Garey Wayne Hayes; infant son, Randall Kent Hayes; parents, Dallas and Maude Parks Hayes; and brothers, Russell Hayes of Eunice, LA, Dallas Hayes of Texas City, TX, and Robert J. “Bob” Hayes of Lake Charles; along with numerous other loved ones throughout the years.
His funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel in Lake Charles. Reverends John Ward and Jaceson Johnson will officiate. Burial will follow in Mimosa Pines Cemetery – South. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and continue on Wednesday from 8:00 AM until the start of the service.
