Arlene "Queen" Adaway Fontenot, born Arlene Jacklyn Price, 59, died Sunday, May 06, 2012 in a local hospital.
Born in Philadelphia, PA, to Laudice and Martha Litwack Price, Arlene graduated from South Philadelphia High School. In 1976, she moved to Westlake, Louisiana, and she made that community her home. She worked in those early years as a telephone operator for South Central Bell, but then became totally involved in growing and protecting her community. She was a member of the Board of Directors of Ward 4, District I Recreation District, and she was a member of the West Cal Kiwanis Club. In 1986 she became a volunteer firefighter for the Westlake Fire Department and in 1987, joined the Westlake Police Department as a part time officer, becoming a full time officer in 1988, and was named Assistant Chief in 1997. In 1993, Arlene was appointed a member of the Violent Crimes Task Force and was an integral part of not only her Westlake Department, but worked hand in hand with all other local, state and many national law enforcement agencies. She was affectionately known as "Queen" by many in law enforcement across the country. Arlene retired from the Westlake Police Department in 2005 and then went to work for the Southwest District Law Enforcement Planning Council as Grant Manager, retiring in December, 2010.
Arlene is survived by her devoted husband of sixteen years, James "Britt" Fontenot of Lacassine; son, Joseph Lee (Joey) Adaway and wife Nicole of Lake Charles; daughter, Amanda Michelle Adaway Taylor and husband Jeff of Dallas; father, and stepmother, Laudice Lee and Lillian Price, Sr. of Philadelphia, PA; sister, Lynne Somoroff and husband Alan of Washington, DC; brother, Laudice Lee Price, Jr. of Chicago; stepsons, Lance Payton Fontenot and Brennan James Fontenot, both of Sulphur; stepdaughters, Lorri Ann Dailey and husband Chris, also of Sulphur, Megan Fontenot Winters and husband Michael of Jacksonville, Florida and Andrea Elizabeth Fontenot of San Diego, CA; and grandchildren, Jake Lee Adaway, Caitlyn Michelle Taylor, Olivia Rose Winters, Cole and Jessie Arceneaux, and Slayde and Dalton Fontenot; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Martha Litwack Hodes Price.
Memorial services will be held at 4:00 PM Wednesday, May 09, 2012 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Rabbi Barrry Weinstein will officiate. Interment will follow in Lacassine Cemetery. Gathering of friends Wednesday will be from 1:00 PM until the time of service in the funeral home.
