Audrey Rutherford Vaughan

September 6, 1937 — August 13, 2021

Jane Audrey Rutherford Vaughan, 83, of Bell City passed away Friday, August 13, 2021 in the comfort of her home, surrounded by family.

Mrs. Vaughan was a native of Creole, LA where she lived most of her life.  Following Hurricane Rita, she and her family made Sweetlake their new home.  She worked her younger years in her grandfather’s Cotton fields and her father’s Cattle farm that was carried on for generation’s.  She was a graduate of South Cameron High School where she was an athlete and later found great pride in following her son’s and then grandchildren to their athletic events at South Cameron High School, livestock shows, as well as all event’s they were involved in.  Mrs. Vaughan enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening and quilting.  She also enjoyed her outings with the “Golden Girls” to clean, cook and volunteer upon Father Joe McGrath’s request.  She was an active member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church and Altar Society.  Mrs. Vaughan will be most remembered as an admirable lady of faith and prayer, instilling in her family the importance of family unity, morals, ethics and living as a Christian. 

She leaves to cherish her memory, two sons, Sterling Alfred Vaughan (Della) of Lake Charles and Andy James Vaughan (Gaylin) of Sweetlake; six grandchildren, Derek Vaughan (Kayley)and Jacob Vaughan (Haiden), both of Sweetlake, Sarah Vaughan Attia (Richard) of Spring, TX, Megan Vaughan of Baton Rouge, Gina Droddy (Jason) of Sulphur and Bryan Walker (Amber) of Morristown, TN; eleven great-grandchildren, Cooper, Karter and Finley Vaughan, Coy and Lane Vaughan, Madaline Attia, Harrison Vaughan, Theresa and Brandon Richard and Drake and Liam Walker.  She also leaves her dear friends of the “Golden Girls”, Betty LaBove and Glenda McEvers.

She was preceded in death by her husband of forty-six years, Alfred Sterling Vaughan; one brother, Pete Winston Rutherford; parents, Raleigh Josheph Rutherford and Elma Marie Richard Rutherford; one sister, Merillia Elizabeth Pennington; “Golden Girl”, Merlene Landry and her beloved fur baby, Honey.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church.  Father Wayne LeBleu will officiate.  Interment services will follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Creole.  Visitation Tuesday will be from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a rosary beginning at 6:00 PM at The Vineyard Church.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Abraham’s Tent.
