Bernice LaCour Jones, 95, died Wednesday, May 18, 2016 in a local care center. Born March 4, 1921 in Simmsport, Louisiana to Murphy and Marie LaCour, she spent most of her life in Baton Rouge. She was a member of Our Lady Mercy Catholic Church from the time the parish was established in the 1950’s. She moved to Lake Charles in 2005, and became a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church.
Bernice was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-two years, Donald A. Jones; her daughter, Mary Jones Polito; grandson, Charles J. Polito; two brothers and one sister. She is survived by her son-in-law Stephen C. Polito of Lake Charles; her grandson Stephen D. Polito and wife Jessica Fontenot Polito of Lake Charles; and two great grandchildren, Stephen L. Polito and Isabella L. Polito, also of Lake Charles.
Bernice enjoyed watching television, reading, growing flowers and playing with her great grandchildren. In earlier years, she worked as office manager in her husband’s contracting company, which built and reconstructed levees primarily along the Mississippi River and other Louisiana waterways.
Visitation will be at Johnson Funeral Home in Lake Charles from 4:30 PM until 7:00 PM on Friday May 20, 2016. Graveside services will be at 11:00 AM Saturday May 21, 2016, in the Lakeside Mausoleum at Greenoaks Cemetery in Baton Rouge, under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.
Memorial Donations may be made to the Children’s Methodist Home, 904 Deville Lane, Ruston, LA 71270, or the charity of one’s choice.
