Bernice Lee Hebert

May 22, 1927 — February 23, 2023

On February 23, 2023, Bernice Lee “BL” Hebert passed away after a life well lived at the age of 95. Our father was preceded in death by his loving wife, Arthurine Mary Hebert who passed away in September 2021, with our father at her side. BL was also preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Bernadette Desormeaux Hebert, as well and his brother, Dolzie J. Hebert and his sister Wanda Hebert Touchet.

Our father was born in Gueydan, Louisiana on May 22, 1927. He married the love of his life Arthurine Hebert on July 19, 1947, when he was 20 years old. Our parents’ love lasted 74 years until our mother passed away with our father faithfully at her bedside, where he stayed for the final years of her life. Together they raised five children starting with Allen Paul Hebert (Marie), Lucinda Bernadette Hebert O’Quinn (Robby), Theresa Gail Hebert (Poppa), Angela Marie Hebert Camp (Bobby), and Burnis Joseph (BJ) Hebert (Robin). Our father was also the proud grandparent of 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Our father was a man of few words but decisive action. At the age of 16, he lied about his age to join the US Navy in 1943 during World War II and received an Honorable Discharge, February 10, 1946. He was trained as a Shipfitter Second Class and welder. He was stationed near Singapore on a Navy ship, USS ARD Fourteen, that was a floating dry dock that would repair naval war ships at sea. After the Navy, he worked as a welder at T & P Iron Works while putting himself through college to earn an associate degree in accounting and later became their accountant. Years later, he went to work at Howell Industries as a manager where over the course of more than 40 years, his direct, no nonsense leadership style which focused on honesty, integrity, and loyalty, created a very successful business that is still in operation today. He eventually became part owner of the business and retired at the young age of 80 to spend time at his beloved “Pecanderosa” where he was happy to spend the rest of his days.
