Betty Elliott House
November 5, 1925 — January 28, 2016
Betty J. Elliott-House, 90, of Lake Charles passed away in Spring, Texas, Thursday, January 28, 2016. Mrs. Elliott-House was a native and life resident of Lake Charles moving a few months ago to Spring, TX. Her father worked in the greater Lafayette and South Louisiana area, and was a graduate from Lafayette High School and obtained her teaching degree from Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now the University of Louisiana in Lafayette) in 1945. Immediately after obtaining her college degree she moved to Lake Charles to teach at LaGrange Junior High School and lived with her grandmother, Beatrice Stagg Curley. On a day in 1945, she was boarding a bus to visit her parents back in Lafayette, a young man in the Army Air Corps, Ralph Elliott, sat beside her. He had a rose in his hand to give to a girl who lived in Lafayette. Ralph instead gave Betty the rose and obtained her grandmother’s phone number. After dating, they married in 1946. Shortly after they married, Ralph was sent to Japan as part of the occupying forces subsequent to World War II. Upon his return in 1948 they started a family and lived in Lake Charles throughout their lives. She raised four children and loved them dearly and was active in their lives. Since 1950 Betty and Ralph were active members in the University United Methodist Church. She taught many Sunday School Classes and vacation Bible School. She was particularly fond of the Stonerollers Sunday School class. She was a member and Circle Chairwoman of the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of and past-President of the Lioness Club and was awarded Lioness of the Year. Unfortunately, her husband Ralph died in 1986. A few years later she fell in love with her associate pastor, Reverend Edward H. House. They married in 1992 and both continued to live in Lake Charles until a few months before her death. Betty Elliott-House had a great love for her fellow man. That love burned most brightly for her children giving them a strong sense of character that is handed-down and continues to this day for the future generations.
