Betty Lou Hanchey

Betty Lou Hanchey, 78, passed away on December, 21, 2106 surrounded by her family in her home. She was born in Duson, LA on November 9, 1938 and lived in Sulphur all of her life. Betty was a member of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for over 50 years. She was a 1957 graduate of Sulphur High and a graduate of McNeese State University. While in kindergarten she met many friends, some whom are still friends today and take time to enjoy lunch together every December. Betty received a degree in Educational Administration and majored in Special Education. She retired in 2006 after 36 years of service as Director of Special Education. She was a loving wife and mother, enjoyed making her special brownies, chocolate chip cookies and gumbo. Betty loved raising her bird of paradise plants, but her main hobby was entertaining.

Betty is survived by her husband of 22 years, Eugene Hanchey; her four children, Paula Fruge and husband Lonnie, Mark Howard and wife Leesa, Trish Varela and husband Raul, and Scott Howard and wife Kelly; her four step children, Debbie Dier and husband Jim, Susan Ham and husband John, Tammy Thomas and husband Mike, and Laurie Cain and husband Al; her 16 grandchildren;3 great grandchildren; and her 2 brothers, Lee and James Leger. She was preceded in death by her parents, Antoine and Laurence Leger; her sister, Lula Mae Johnson; and a brother, Robert Leger.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, December 23, 2016 at 10 A.M. at Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sulphur with Father Aubrey Guilbeau officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 22, 2016 from 4-9 P.M. with a rosary at 6 P.M. at Johnson and Robison Funeral Home. Visitation will resume on Friday from 8 A.M. until time of leaving for the church. The family would like special recognition to the doctors and staff at St. Luke Hospital in Houston, West Cal-Cam Hospital, and Cornerstone in Sulphur. Also special thanks to the staff of Heart of Hospice in Lake Charles. The family will always be indebted to the home support ladies, Nancy, Diana, Julia, Donna, Sandra and Darlyn. Betty received superior care from her doctors, especially, Dr. Lannon, Dr. Ledet Dr. Varela and Dr. Smith.
