Billy Wayne Smith, 72, of Sulphur passed away Wednesday, January 08, 2014 in a local hospital. Mr. Smith was born in Shreveport, LA and has lived most of his life in Sulphur. He was a graduate of Sulphur High School and served as a Paratrooper in the United States Army. He also attended McNeese State University and completed Law Enforcement Licensing and Certification at Louisiana State University. Mr. Smith retired with the Lake Charles City Police as Major Assistant Chief, having served as Police Officer, Detective Sergeant, Uniform Lieutenant, Uniform Captain and Major. He also served the Calcasieu Parish Sherriff's Office as a Patrol Officer, Calcasieu Parish Marshall's Office, and returned to CPSO as Day Shift Supervisor with the Lake Charles Division and retired Public Relation Officer with the Sulphur Substation. Throughout the course of his career, Mr. Smith served in many areas from "walking the beat", motor cycle officer, detectives to Bailiff. He devoted his life to public service and helping people. His "soft spot" was for children and the homeless, as he bought countless strangers a meal of choice and many others home for a meal. Outside of his admirable work ethics, he enjoyed duck hunting and especially loved fishing. His greatest accomplishment, his family, as he took great pride in his influence in his children. His greatest joy, his grandchildren. Mr. Smith will be most remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor. He leaves to honor his memory, four children, DeeDee Patterson of Welsh and companion, Darwin Brown of Welsh, Doug Smith and wife Ronica of Lake Charles, David Smith and wife Monica of Sulphur and Angela Smith Clopton and husband Kevin of Sulphur; eight grandchildren, Charles Patterson, Ryan Smith, Cameron Smith, Gayle Benoit, Shelby Smith, Garret Smith, Kaley Hinch and Gunnar Clopton; two great-grandchildren, Gunnar Patterson and Remmi Patterson and one sister, Carol DeRon of Brooklyn, TX and his best buddy, "Skeeter", his little Yorkie. The family of Mr. Smith would like to express special thanks to Helen Gaspard for her friendship. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Beth Smith and 1st wife Susan Utley Smith Wrigley; his parents, Willie Edward "Bill" and Rita Bloxom "Susie" Smith and one brother, Jerry Edward Smith. Funeral services will be at 12:00 PM Saturday, January 11, 2014 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Doctor Bart Leger will officiate. Interment with honors will follow in Mimosa Pines Cemetery. Visitation Friday will be from 4:00 PM until 9:00 PM and will continue Saturday from 9:00 AM until the time of service in the funeral home.
