Bobby Lee Barnes, 77 of Westlake, La passed away November 15, 2024, in a local hospital surrounded by his loving family. Bobby graduated from Sulphur High School in 1965, where he was nationally ranked as a javelin thrower, letterman and allstate in track and field. Bobby was an elite dual sport athlete and was recognized in the Sulphur High Hall of Fame. He attended McNeese State University and continued his journey in sports. He was a hard throwing lefthander, where he was a two-sport standout for the Cowboys, serving as pitcher for the baseball team and as a javelin thrower in track. Many times, he would toss the javelin on a weekend track meet and then go out and pitch a baseball game. He was an all-conference pitcher in 1967, and the following year won the league’s javelin title. He also won the baseball team MVP and during his career hurled 14 complete games, 170 innings, struck out 135 batters and had a career 2.32 ERA. He was inducted into the McNeese Hall of Fame in 1993 for track and field and baseball. An arm injury forced him to miss out on a professional career. After college he went on to play in a semi-pro softball league in Southwest Louisiana. Several years ago, he went back to throwing the javelin in Senior Olympic competitions. Bobby was an avid golfer and member of Frasch Mens Golf Association. When he wasn’t on the greens, he loved spending time on the water fishing.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Bridget Barnes; children, Patrick Scott Barnes (Gina), Michelle “Chelle” Martin (Byron); grandchildren, Blake Martin, Kinley Barnes, and Marlie Barnes; siblings, Betty Jean “Jeanie” Ellender (Herman “Junior”) and Sheryl Welch (Donnie), numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, Richard Sr. and Lillie Mae Barnes; brother, Richard Jr. “Butch” Barnes; grandson, Donald Bryce Martin.
The family would like to thank Lake Charles Memorial Hospital Emergency Room and 2T, and the LSU Family Medicine Team for the care given to Bobby.
