Bonnie Reed Guidry

September 15, 1938 — February 25, 2018

Today we mourn the passing of Bonnie Reed Guidry of Lake Charles, a loving wife, mom and grandmother. She was a brave woman, overcoming many health obstacles, but never complaining or giving up. She was a true inspiration to many.

Bonnie was born September 15, 1938 in Beaumont, Texas to Wiley and Nolen Soileau Reed. She attended schools in Orange, Texas and Lake Charles before graduating in 1956 from Mamou High School. After high school, she worked in Lake Charles at Newberry Department Stores, the old Gulf National Bank and Jim Walters Home Builders, and at one time was licensed in Cosmetology and Real Estate. She retired from the Calcasieu Parish School Board after twenty years of service working with handicapped children in the Transportation Department.

She loved her family very much and always looked forward to being involved with her children, especially in their school activities. She had a great sense of Cajun humor and loved to tell the fun stories she remembered growing up. If she couldn’t get a chuckle out of you, you were probably just having a bad day. And if you went to spend the night, you needed to be prepared to stay up and talk all night, because she enjoyed doing that, too.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Rayford Guidry; sons, Danny Guidry of Baton Rouge and David Guidry of Lake Charles; granddaughters, Kaitlin Guidry Granberry and husband Lee of Hattiesburg, Mississippi and Kayleigh of Lake Charles; and a special niece who was like a daughter to her, Janice Guidry. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews in Louisiana and North Carolina. Gone before her besides her parents were her brother Bradley Reed, her sister Tressie Reed Marcantel, and a special uncle of whom she was very fond, Wesley Reed.

In addition to her niece, Janice Reed, her family would like to thank a special cousin, Carolyn Perry Cruze, who unselfishly devoted so much of her time to be with Bonnie in her final days, Debbie Ferrie Fontenot, who enjoyed keeping Bonnie company, the staff at Christus St. Patrick Hospice for their tender care and guidance, The Terminix Management Team of Baton Rouge for their daily group prayers, and all of the individuals, too many to name, who offered their prayers and support. Also, a very special thanks to Dr. Joel Kneitz and his nurse Tina Muro at St. Luke’s Tower in Houston, Texas for their constant care and treatment of Bonnie throughout the years.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any military service organization, children’s cancer treatment centers, or a church of your choice.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 PM on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Monsignor Daniel Torres will officiate. Interment will be at Consolata Cemetery. A rosary will be said at the funeral home on Tuesday at 5 p.m., and visitation will follow from 5:30 until 9 p.m. and resume on Wednesday from 8 am until 1:30 pm.
