Byron Gant Nelson

October 28, 1941 — June 14, 2017

Byron Gant Nelson, 75, passed peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, June 14th.

Byron was born on October 28th, 1941 in Baytown, Texas. He graduated from Lake Charles High School in 1959 as a star athlete and honor student then proceeded to McNeese State College until 1961. After receiving an education Byron then enlisted in the United States Army from 1961 to 1968 where he proudly served our country with honor. He enjoyed carpentry, renovation, and relaxing on his beloved wharf. He was inherently at peace near the river watching the boats pass by.

Byron was known for his genuine smile and infectious laugh. He was humble, tenacious, and incredibly intelligent. Many described him as a “one of a kind” character. Byron was driven to further his knowledge on any given topic with literature and research. He cherished close friendships with neighbors and spoke highly of those dear to him. Above everything Byron took great pride in being a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was fiercely dedicated to his daughters and granddaughters. Byron’s life joy was solely attributed to his family. Always on his mind and in his heart he loved unconditionally without falter. His home was adorned with photos and accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. His love was all encompassing and unwavering.

Byron is survived by his two children, Robin Nelson-Ross, Stephanie Soileau and her husband Jonah Gendron; his two grandchildren, Lindsay Ross and Adelaide Gendron; and his great-grandson Rainn Ross.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, June 23, 2017 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel.  The Rev. Russell Beard will officiate.  A gathering of family and friends will begin on Thursday from 3:00 PM until 9:00 PM and will continue on Friday from 8:00 AM until the start of the service.
