Camille Cormie

October 23, 1931 — June 5, 2022

Camille Theresa Calloura Cormie, 90, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, June 5, 2022, with her beloved husband and family at her side.

A resident of Lake Charles, Mrs. Cormie was born to Samuel and Katherine Lucille Abate Calloura on October 23, 1931.  She was a 1950 graduate of LaGrange High School, where she was active in the Gatorette’s, was a member of the National Honor Society and other school organizations, and was crowned one of the Queens.  Between her family duties and business activities, Mrs. Cormie attended McNeese State University for two years.  At different times while busy and lovingly caring for her husband and five children, Mrs. Cormie worked in finance and record keeping for local companies being highly regarded for her abilities and dedication.

Camille and Mural owned and operated stores under the “Cormie” name between 1953 and 1991 where all their children worked along with them.  Being in a “family operated” business afforded Mural and Camille the unique and wonderful opportunity to have their children “close by” to love and nourish and be able to help them learn to serve others.  In 1991, their oldest son assumed ownership.

“Maw-Maw Cormie,” was the name of endearment given by her family and friends.  The recipes for many of the deli items found at “Cormie’s” are her creations.  Camille’s legacy of love for Christ, devotion to her family, kindness to people and graceful perseverance in difficult times will be long remembered.  She was the true matriarch and “steady hand” at Cormie’s.  She had a true affinity for all of God’s creation.

In 1981, she and her husband moved to DeRidder, LA, where they joined First Baptist Church there in 1991.  Mrs. Cormie joyfully served the Lord in various capacities, including the Joy Singers, the Adult Choir, Secretary-Treasurer of the Adult 2 Couples Class, and the Prayer Ministry.  She and Mr. Cormie participated in 6 major mission tours in different states, one in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, and several in Louisiana.

Later, Camille and Mural moved back to Lake Charles, where they became active members of Trinity Baptist Church and where she was a member of the Emma Couples Sunday School class and served in the Intercessory Prayer Ministry; both she and Mural were passionate about praying for Trinity’s leadership, the needs of others, and all functions of their church.

Mrs. Cormie was preceded in death by her parents, Katherine Abate and Samuel Calloura; and one son, Samuel J. Cormie.

She is survived by her beloved husband of seventy-one years, Mural Ray Cormie, Sr.; three sons, Mural Ray Cormie, Jr. and wife Linda, Nathan David Cormie and wife Claudia, and Greg Cormie and wife Eileen; one daughter, Brenda Porche and husband Mike, all of Lake Charles; one brother, Frank Calloura and wife Myrna of Lafayette; one sister, Marie Ryan of Ramer, AL; eleven grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Her funeral service will be at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, June 8, 2022 at Johnson Funeral Home of Lake Charles.  Reverend Steve James, Senior Pastor of Trinity Baptist Church, will officiate.  Burial will follow in Prien Memorial Park.  Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10:00 AM until the start of the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Trinity Baptist Church of Lake Charles, First Baptist Church of DeRidder, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or to the charity of choice.

The family would like to express a special word of thanks to Heart of Hospice for the excellent care and compassion given during these final days.
