Carol Hopper, age 84, passed away Monday, March 28, 2011, at her residence surrounded by her loving family.
Born December 16, 1926, in New Orleans, she was a native of Gulfport, MS. She graduated from Cadet Nursing Program in New Orleans during WW II and was an American Red Cross Nurse and a medical missionary to Nicaragua. Upon the opening of South Cameron Memorial Hospital, she moved to Cameron where she was a nurse there at the hospital for over 25 years. There she was a member of Catholic Daughters Court Marie Olive in Creole, LA. She became a resident of Lake Charles 38 years ago where she was a member of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. Mrs. Hopper was world traveler and traveled outside the country 37 times. Her family will always cherish her memories and interesting stories from her many trips that were shared with everyone she met. Mrs. Hopper loved plants and flowers as well. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Kenneth Hopper of Lake Charles; two daughters, Madeline Hopper Savoie and husband, James, of Lake Charles and Marie Celeste Hopper-Petsch of Austin, TX; 1 grandchild, Candice Savoie Menard and husband, Ricky of Lake Charles; one great-grandson, Justin Menard of Lake Charles; and one sister, Violet Kastner of Dixon, IL.
Her funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 31 2011, at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. Msgr. James Gaddy will officiate. Burial will follow in Prien Memorial Park. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 30, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and again on Thursday, March 31, from 8 a.m. until time of service. A talk from the heart will begin at 6:30 p.m. by her great-grandson, Justin Menard, followed by a poem read by her daughter, Madeline H. Savoie. Next will be the song, "Amazing Grace" which will be led by her daughter, Marie Celeste Hopper-Petsch. She will also be performing sign language at that time. A rosary will follow at 7 p.m.
