Carolyn L. Slade, 74, entered heaven’s gate on July 8th, 2017. Carolyn was born on April 13, 1943, in Lake Charles, LA and grew up in DeQuincy, LA. Carolyn was known to many simply as “Carolyn” but close family and friends knew her as “Cookie”.
Carolyn had a fulfilled life and succeeded in many roles as a daughter, sister, wife, teacher, mother, and her most cherished role as Nana. She earned a Bachelor’s of Arts degree from Northwestern State University in 1965 and then received a Master’s of Education from McNeese State University in 1970. Her Master’s degree led her to a successful career in education. She spent the next 35 years of her life as an elementary teacher at Moss Bluff, St. John, and Fairview Elementary. She enjoyed her retirement years traveling to many places around the world, spending time with family and friends, creating yearly memory scrapbooks for her granddaughter, Katelyn, and cheering on her favorite college football team, the LSU Tigers. She was an active member in her community and devoted countless hours helping others. Carolyn remained active in the Xi Beta Delta Sorority, a Louisiana chapter, which focuses on providing help for both local and national service projects. Carolyn received the Golden Circle pin for her 50 years of service as well as the highest degree, Torch Bearer. She was a member of St. Luke-Simpson United Methodist Church where she enjoyed fellowship, sang in the choir, and was actively involved in the Dee Cline Circle, a United Methodist women’s group, and devoted her time and talent in the church’s craft circle.
Carolyn is preceded in death by her parents, Woodrow and Margaret Martin; and son, David Slade.
Carolyn is survived by her daughter, Cherie Slade-Carlock and husband Jarrett; brother, Winn Martin and wife Noreen; grandchild, Katelyn Carlock; niece, Jennifer Beech; nephew and godchild, Andrew Martin; niece, Wynnetta Harris; along with six grand-nieces and nephew.
Carolyn led a simple “no frills” life. She was practical in every way but was very content in every aspect of it. She was very artistic, learning most of her art techniques and skills from her grandmother. Some of her many talents were sewing, making clothes and creating crafts, sometimes from scratch for her family, friends and craft circle for church.
Carolyn exemplified what it meant to live your life by God’s Word. Her faith was unquestionable, as it clearly showed by her love and dedication to her children, family and friends. It was almost second nature for her to think of others first, sometimes before her very own needs. Carolyn may be gone, but she and our memories of her will forever remain in our hearts.
The family wishes to share memories and greet friends from 10AM until time of service at noon on Saturday, July 22, 2017. Dr. John Robert Black from St. Luke-Simpson United Methodist Church will officiate. Cremation has been entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to her family or in honor of Carolyn for the columbarium at St. Luke-Simpson United Methodist Church.
