Charles D. Floyd, Jr.

November 13, 1934 — April 5, 2021

Charles “Charlie” Declalde Floyd Jr., 86, passed away April 5, 2021 surrounded by family in Lafayette, LA.

Charles was born November 13th, 1934 in Gilbert, LA to parents Ethel and Charles Floyd Sr.

Charles joined the Air Force as part of the engineering core at the young age of 17.  During his time serving in the Air Force, he was stationed at the Elmendorf Airbase in Anchorage, AK, where he would meet his wife Ruth Ahgupuk. During their 18 years of marriage, they raised their three children Beverly, Michael “Mike”, and Angela. He served overseas during the Korean Conflict where he would ultimately receive two Purple Heart Medals.  Before Charles and Ruth moved and settled in Westlake, LA to raise their family, he and Ruth traveled the United States together. Following his discharge from the Air Force Charles began his career as a dredge operator for Mike Hooks. He was also a part of building the PPG plant in Westlake where he would then retire as an operator for PPG.

Charles, better known as Charlie by his many friends, enjoyed and spent most of his time on the river running trotlines, and frying fish at his camp in Topsy on the Calcasieu River. He and his second wife of 37 years Claudette Floyd built the camp together with construction starting in 1983 and completing their home away from home 4 years later in 1987. If you went to the camp his fried catfish or perch would be an anticipated meal, no fish fry of his was complete without his fresh-cut fries, fried onions, and pistolettes. He was also a man of many talents and hobbies, when it was too cold to fish you could find him hunting squirrels or warming up next to the heater. There was nothing too broken that he could not fix, it may have not been fancy or pretty but by the time he was done it would be “fixed”. Not only was he a legend when it came to frying fish or turkeys, but he was also a legend to his family with his love for music, he enjoyed playing the guitar with his sisters joining in with their instruments and voices, he was a true man of talent. The memories he created with his family, children, and grandchildren spending warm summer days on the sandbar, running trout lines for that day’s dinner, or the family concerts following supper are memories that last longer than a lifetime they are stories that will carry on his legacy.

Charlie left behind a camp, an old boat, his four-legged companion, Dixie; and his legacy to his two daughters, Beverly Ruth Floyd-James of Houston, TX and Angela Floyd Thibodeaux of Moss Bluff, LA; four sisters, Pat Ardoin of Corpus Christi, TX, Dee Mallion and husband Bill of Sherwood, AR, Joyce Miller of Lake Charles, LA and Reta Rebstock and husband Ron of Houston, TX; along with eight grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

Charles is preceded in death by his late wife, Claudette Chaumont Floyd; parents, Ethel E. Floyd and Charles D. Floyd Sr.; his son, Michael “Mike” Floyd; and one grandson, Eric Evans.

Visitation will be held Saturday, April 10, 2021 at 10 AM until the time of the service at Johnson Funeral Home in Moss Bluff, LA.
