Charles F. Hebert died Friday evening, February 15, 2013, in the comfort of his home with loved ones at his side in Sweetlake, LA, at the age of 102.
Charles was born in Sweetlake, LA, October 21, 1910, but when he was quite young, his family moved to Lake Charles, LA, after a storm destroyed their farmhouse. He and his 7 brothers and sisters attended Fourth Ward School, Central School and Lake Charles High School, then Charles went on to Louisiana Normal Teachers College in Natchitoches, LA. Later, when he married Alida Desselle and started his own family, Charles moved to Cameron, LA. There he worked with his Uncle John Daigle and Aunt Emma Smith Daigle and became an excellent Abstractor. Later on, in 1951, he founded his own Hebert Abstract Company. His son, Terry Hebert, joined the Company in 1980. Charles was active as an Abstractor and in the daily operations of the Company until 2005. To this day, the Company still provides quality abstracting services for Cameron Parish.
During his years in Cameron, he worked with other members of the community to make things better. As one of the Founders of the Cameron Lions Club in 1944, he held every Officer's position (at least once) as an active member until 2005. He was honored as Cameron's Lion of the Year in 1986 and in 2000. In the early 1980's, he received the Cameron Parish Citizen of the Year Award for his commitment and dedication to community service through the years.
As one of the founders of Cameron State Bank in 1966, he served on the Board of Directors and participated in its growth through 2006, when he retired as a Board Member Emeritus. In 2011, Cameron State Bank merged with IberiaBank.
In addition to his professional and community activities, he liked spending time outdoors--fishing, hunting, working with cattle and horses, clearing land, building and repairing fences, and doing yard work. He made many fishing trips in the Gulf of Mexico and the Calcasieu River with family and friends as Captain of an offshore fishing boat he named Bo-Jac. He enjoyed spending time with Alida, Terry, Judy, granddaughter Denise Hebert Tremonte (and her daughters Nicole and Sarah), as well as with his grandson Christopher Charles Criglow (wife Kelly, their daughter Madeleine and son Christian).
Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Alida Desselle Hebert, his parents, John Aurelian Hebert and Mathilda Smith Hebert of Lake Charles, LA, his brothersWallace Preacher Hebert of Westlake, LA, and Austin Foots Hebert of Lake Charles, his sisters Bessie Hebert Mackey of Winnie, TX, Hilda Peanut Hebert Bean of Vallejo, CA, Winnie Hebert Moss of Lake Charles, LA, and Violet Pug Hebert Wilson Mounton of Kinder, LA.
