Charles Richard Koenig, 96, of Lake Charles, passed away Sunday, January 5, 2025. Charles was born in Baton Rouge, on January 4, 1929, to August and Lura Koenig. He was a graduate of Louisiana State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and was a professional engineer.
Following graduation, he was employed by Freeport Sulphur Company, where he worked as a construction and start up engineer for the world’s first offshore sulfur mine at Grand Isle Louisiana.
He and his family moved to Lake Charles in 1962, going to work for Olin Corporation. He retired after thirty years of service in the maintenance engineering department and later in the maintenance supervision areas.
He was an Air Force veteran having served during the Korean War. Following active duty, he remained in the reserve for twenty years, retiring as a Lt. Colonel. He was a longtime member of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church.
Charles enjoyed a little fishing or an occasional round of golf, but mostly being with the grandchildren and great grandchildren. His past time passion was baseball, and he was active for many years in South Lake Charles Little League serving as manager, coach and member of Board of Directors.
He is survived by his loving wife of 74 years, Beverly Layne Koenig; sons, Mark Koenig (Veanice), Brent Koenig (Melanie), and daughter Claire Guth (Dr. Charles); grandchildren, Brandy Pearce (Jay), Neil Koenig (Lindsey), Edward Guth (Yasmin), Sarah Hyde (Christopher), Becky Koenig, Michael Koenig (Brittany), Hannah Kubisch (Austin); great-grandchildren, John Kyle and Savannah Pearce, Ty Koenig, Adalie and Matilda Guth, Caden, Madelyn, and Collin Hyde, Kate and Laura Koenig.
He was preceded in death by parents, August and Lura Koenig; brother George Glynn Koenig and sister Jane Koenig Miller.
Visitation will be Thursday, January 9, 2025, from 12:30PM until the service time at 2:00PM, at Johnson Funeral Home, 4321 Lake St. Lake Charles, LA. 70605; Pastor Christopher Hyde will officiate the service. Burial and military honors will follow the service at Consolata Cemetery.
In Lieu of flowers the family has requested donation be made to The Wounded Warrior Project in Charles honor.
