Daeng Thi “Emm” Khoang, a resident of Lake Charles, LA for the past 39 years died unexpectedly on July 23, 2021 at the age of 71 while tending to her garden.
Daeng was known as Emm, meaning mother in her native language due to her nurturing qualities and always being regarded as everyone’s mother. She was part of the ethnic minority called Tai Dam from her native Country of Laos.
Emm is preceded in death by her husband, Phane Lavan; her son, Somphone Lavan; and her parents, Fink Quangvan and Home Lothi.
Emm is survived by her children, Somphet Lavan (Khaysy Liamkeo), Khamsouk Lavan (Stephanie), Thavone Lavan (Maria) and Khamone Riley (Scott); her grandchildren, Samantha, Gabrielle, Madilyn, Jey, Brianna, Christian, Lyndsey, Izzy, Matthew, Sarah, Braylee and Liam. Emm has four step siblings in Laos.
Emm was born in Ban Nakhoang Muong Moa Sonia, Province of Vietnam on June 20, 1950. She immigrated to the United States along with her five children in 1982. Emm married Phane Lavan in her native Country of Laos and the family reunited in the United States in 1982. Emm worked as a housekeeper at the Downtowner before eventually becoming a full-time homemaker. Emm was a devoted mother and wife who enjoyed catering to her children and grandchildren. She spent most of her days in her garden growing and harvesting vegetables and herbs. It was her favorite place in the world. She always wore a loving smile and would ensure anyone who came to visit her home left with a full stomach and a hand full of vegetables from her garden. Emm will be deeply missed by her children, grandchildren and all that knew her.
A final viewing is scheduled between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on July 25 with the funeral service to follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Moss Bluff at 2171 North Hwy 171, Moss Bluff, LA 70611. Reverend Brother Jack will officiate. Flowers and condolences may be offered at the Funeral Home.
