Darius "Joe" Lee LaVergne, Sr, 77, of Sweetlake, LA, died at 8:38 AM on Monday, September 7, 2015 in a local care facility. Mr. LaVergne was born September 15, 1937 in Mermentau, LA and lived in Westlake, LA for a number of years before making his home in Sweetlake for the past forty years. He worked as a bridge tender at the Grand Lake Bridge and prior to that, he worked for Precht and Hebert Farming. He was a member of Grand Lake Faith Temple. He enjoyed carpentry and was an avid LSU fan. Mr. LaVergne is survived by his wife of forty-nine years, Jeanne Marie Logue LaVergne; daughters, Merri Christine LaVergne Meiburg and husband Frederick of Lake Charles and Sarah Renita LaVergne of Lafayette, LA; son, Darius Lee LaVergne, Jr. and wife Lisa Ryan LaVergne of Amarillo, TX; sisters, Betty Jane LaVergne Whetnall and Ethel Marie LaVergne Moody and husband Horace; brothers, Ray Floyd LaVergne and wife Shirley and Ralay LaVergne and wife Brenda; grandchildren, Joshua Meiburg, Jamie Meiburg, Jennifer Meiburg, Jaclyn Meiburg Stephens, and Gabrielle LaVergne; and great-grandchildren, William Meiburg and Cheyenne Stephens. His memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Andrew Martin will officiate. A gathering of family members and friends will be held at the funeral home on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the start of the service.
