David H. Broussard, Sr., 68, died unexpectedly in his residence in Lake Charles, Louisiana, on Sunday, May 10, 2020. Born on December 1, 1951 in New Iberia, Louisiana to Waldean Mae and Harvey L. Broussard, David was the second-born of four siblings. He will be remembered for being a devoted and loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and uncle, as well as for his quick wit and endless knowledge of ‘trivia’.
Although David was quiet and somewhat shy as a child, he used his sharp mind and clever wit to gain confidence as he managed his way through life’s offerings. Growing up in New Iberia and later Bogalusa, Louisiana, he became interested in what many young men did in the 1950’s and 60’s, cars and motorcycles. David developed a very admirable work ethic at a young age. When his father accepted a transfer to relocate to St. Petersburg, Florida in late 1966, David started mowing lawns in the neighborhood where they lived. At the age of only 15, he had quickly developed a sizeable number of satisfied clients. He was business-savvy enough to eventually “sell” his list of clients to a friend who was anxious to start mowing lawns when David landed a restaurant job. During his high school years he became interested in body building, working out with weights and, of course, spending his hard-earned money on cars and motorcycles.
In 1969 his father accepted another transfer, this time to Lake Charles, Louisiana. Having finished High School, David chose to remain in Florida for several months, as he was working full-time driving a truck for a seafood company supplying restaurants on the Gulf Coast of Florida.
The following year, he was welcomed “home” to Lake Charles to reunite with the family. He began working while studying at McNeese University. Lake Charles is where he met the future mother of his two sons, his first wife, Mary Ann (Matte) Broussard. They were married on January 11, 1973, during one of the most memorable snow events in Lake Charles’ recent history. David and Mary’s sons and grandsons were, without a doubt, his proudest achievements in life, and he loved them dearly.
After the birth of their first son, David accepted employment with the US Postal Service as a clerk, where he worked for over twenty years, serving at both the main Post Office and Drew Station. From 1990 until 1993 he served as treasurer for a local self-help group in Lake Charles. He later had the opportunity to acquire the necessary knowledge and talent to operate dry cleaning machinery at AAA Dry Cleaners, where he spent ten years. Later, after back surgery, he managed to work another ten-year stint with Kroger Co. before retiring in late 2019.
He is preceeded in death by his parents, Waldean “Dean” and Harvey L. Broussard, his first wife, Mary Matte Broussard, and his second wife, Jenifer Reed Broussard. Left to cherish his memory are siblings, Ellen C. Broussard, Robert “Rob” Broussard and Janine M. Falgoust, his two sons, David H. Broussard, Jr., (Amie) of Houston, Texas, and Jeremy R. Broussard (Leah) of Lake Charles, grandsons Riley and August Broussard, niece, Julia Falgoust, and many cousins.
