David L. Hoskins

David L. Hoskins, 72, died on September 28, 2017 in New Orleans. He was born in Burlington, WI, on May 24, 1945, to Dwight L. and Alice Anderskow Hoskins. He spent his early childhood in Oklahoma and moved to southwest Louisiana just before Hurricane Audrey.

 

David graduated from Sulphur High School and took a BA in English from Centenary College where he edited the college Newspaper, The Conglomerate. He received a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, which he used to study Anglo-Irish literature at University College in Dublin, Ireland. He served in the U.S. Army and was a Vietnam veteran. He received a law degree from Tulane University, where he made Law Review. He practiced law in Lake Charles for many years, and at the time of his death was associated with the Lee, Futrell, and Perles law firm in New Orleans. He was a gifted writer and published author of both poetry and short fiction.

 

David is survived by his wife, Martha; his daughter Leah Hoskins Begnaud and husband Rusty and grandchildren, Cameron, Sarah, and Emily Currie, all of lake Charles; his sister, Ruth Hoskins Polson and husband Lonnie and nephews Steven and Dwight, all of Cherokee, OK; nephew, David John Polson of Kiowa, KS; and his brother-in-law, Scott Pickens of Houston, TX.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Micah Ward Hoskins; his brother, Capt. John T. Hoskins; and sister, Lorraine Hoskins.

 

Visitation will be Wednesday, October 4th, from 6-8 p.m.. A memorial service will be held Thursday, October 5th at 4 p.m. in Johnson Funeral Home in Lake Charles, with the Rev. Seth Donald and Rev. Frances Kay officiating. There will be a private burial at Big Woods Cemetery.
