Dawn Kathleen Leger

August 14, 1938 — August 21, 2024

Our beloved mother, Dawn Kathleen Leger, passed away surrounded by the love of her children, sisters, caregiver, grandchildren, and friends who, though not physically present, were with her in spirit. She was preceded in death by her mother Kathleen, her father Joseph, and her husband Milbon.

Born in 1938 in Kings Lynn, England, Dawn was the eldest of three daughters, with Pauline and Judith as her beloved sisters. Her youth was filled with family, lifelong friends like Pearl, Marie, and Sylvia, and a deep sense of community. Dawn pursued secretarial studies at a technical college, laying the groundwork for her future endeavors.

Dawn’s life took a significant turn when she met Milbon Leger at the YMCA in England. He was stationed at Sculthorpe Air Force Base, and their connection was immediate. They married in June, just six months after meeting, and soon embarked on a new adventure together in Louisiana. Despite leaving behind her cherished England, Dawn embraced this new chapter with her characteristic optimism and adventurous spirit. She often said, “You can take the girl out of England, but you can’t take England out of the girl.”

Welcomed warmly by the Leger family, Dawn found comfort in the values and traditions that mirrored her own. Milbon’s mother, Pearl, was particularly supportive, helping Dawn navigate the many differences between her old and new worlds.

Dawn began working at Sears Roebuck with the simple goal of affording a much-needed air conditioner. What started as a practical necessity turned into a rewarding career spanning thirty-four years, marked by promotions and enduring friendships. She retired with a sense of accomplishment and many fond memories.

As a mother to Mark and Michelle, Dawn and Milbon instilled a strong work ethic, honesty, and a deep commitment to family. Their love and guidance shaped their children’s lives and values.

In retirement, Dawn found joy in spending time with her three grandchildren-Nathaniel, Zach, and Sam. She delighted in sharing stories and updates about them with anyone who would listen. Her “Dawn” days were often filled with gritty mystery novels, “shoot them up and bang them up” movies with thrilling action, and music ranging from the classics to Frank Sinatra. She cherished celebrating milestones and traditions with loved ones.

Dawn loved her shopping trips, tea breaks, lunches with friends Gil and Jean, and she never missed a St. George’s Day celebration. She was dedicated to volunteering in her community and relished her many trips back to England to visit her family and friends.

Dawn’s life was a testament to love, honesty, and curiosity. She deeply valued her family, friends, and her endless pursuit of knowledge. Her ability to connect with people and make them feel special was one of her many gifts, which she carried with her to North Carolina, where she formed many new friendships.

Dawn passed away on August 21, 2024. She is survived by a loving family and a circle of friends who will always hold her in their hearts.
