Demcy Levi Buckie Burwell

July 1, 1927 — September 4, 2011

Demcy Levi "Buckie" Burwell, 84, of Lake Charles entered into rest Sunday, September 4, 2011 from a local hospital.


Mr. Burwell was born, raised and educated in Oklahoma and has lived 61 years in Lake Charles. He was a graduate of Oaks High School and attained his Bachelor's degree in Education from Northeastern State University at Tahlaquah, OK. He served the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict and was a lifetime member of the VFW. Mr. Burwell worked most of his life as a Carpenter for the Carpenter's Local #953. He was a member of St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church.


Mr. Burwell was a family man, taking great pride in his wife, children and in having his grandchildren over any chance he could. He will be most remembered as a very outgoing and his colorful character.


He leaves to honor his memory, his loving wife, Shirley Verret Burwell of Lake Charles; two children, Leah Danette Landry of Lake Charles and Troy Burwell of Houston, TX; four grandchildren, Erin Madeiros and husband Michael of Okinawa, Japan, Katie Niles and husband Chris , Stephanie Abshire and Robert Leger, all of Lake Charles; nine great- grandchildren, Micaela, Ashton and Mya Madeiros and Sarina Abshire and Brianna, Conner and Kaden Niles, Ethan Abshire and Cheyanne Witherwax; one brother, James Burwell and wife Bobbie of OK and two sisters, Ellen Davis and husband Eddie and Clara Cleveland and husband Pete, both of OK.


He was preceded in death by his parents, twelve brothers and sisters and one great- granddaughter, Karen Stoute.


A mass of Christian burial will be at 2:00 PM Thursday, September 8, 2011 at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Father Wayne LeBleu will officiate. Interment will follow in Consolata Cemetery. Visitation Wednesday will be from 4:00 PM until 9:00 PM with a rosary beginning at 6:30 PM. Visitation Thursday will be from 8:00 AM until 1:30 PM in the funeral home.
