D.J. Somers

February 14, 1949 — December 15, 2022

It is with sad and Heavy Hearts that we announce D.J. Somers passed away Thursday December 15th, 2022, at age 73. DJ left us for what is sure to be his grandest Adventure yet. He was surrounded by family and friends to see him off. Born Walter Wellington Somers Jr in Cleveland Ohio on February 14th, 1949, to Walter and Lilian Somers. The eldest of four boys DJ stepped up to the task with a childhood filled with pranks, torture and mischief at the expense of his brothers he loved so much. DJ graduated from Gilmour Academy in Mills, Ohio in 1967 and as expected went on to a brief stint in higher learning but when given the opportunity to travel the country with bands such as the Doobie Brothers and The Grateful Dead DJ did what any young adventurous man would do and found himself thumbing the back roads of America. After a brief recovery from his travels DJ started Rainbow construction and got into the restaurant business. DJ then found his true passion in hunting and fishing. Moving forward to the late 80's while visiting Cabo San Lucas DJ met a great group of people from Southwest Louisiana and after an intense volleyball game and winning a friendly bet on the biggest fish caught as DJ would tell it. Whether it be the growing friendship or the continued lake effect snow or that Opening Day in Ohio refers to the Cleveland Indians first game DJ moved his family to Southwest Louisiana where they remain still. Maybe it was the grasshoppers, the gumbo or the prized golden eye that kept him here we may never know but we all found a Friend, father figure, role model or caring voice when we needed it in DJ and much more. An avid outdoorsman, D.J. hunted as often as possible in his favorite blind in the bayou of southern Louisiana. He also hunted countless times with his numerous friends in Texas, Mexico, and Argentina. He had great skill in setting up duck blinds and calling birds in, was also an excellent shot. He was one of the best blind mates a friend could have. He let birds pass so others could get a shot, deflected credit for birds he obviously took, and gently helped improve the hunting skills of those who hunted with him. A day in a blind with DJ could pass in what seemed like minutes. He was known by all for having a huge kind heart. He was a gentle soul, who loved to sit and talk endlessly with his family and friends. He never argued, bragged, or complained. DJ was best known for being quick to praise others and never too busy to talk. He had an endless generosity always helped family and friends whenever they needed anything. DJ also had a longtime love of horses, both in showing and riding, as well as breeding and raising miniature ponies on his beloved farm. Few knew this, but he also sailed throughout the Caribbean Sea while catching sailfish. He also finished crossword puzzles daily. He was a true renaissance man

He is survived by his two loving children Chrissy Somers Nail and Deke Somers. His grandchildren he loved so much Marley Nail, Triston Nail, Jacob Going, Gavin Nail, Little DJ Somers, Destiny Somers, Zeke Somers, Camren Ervin and Andi Ervin. Nephews Alex Somers and Billy Somers. Niece Ashley Somers and many others who called DJ Pawpaw, Uncle, and Brother.

DJ was preceded in death by his mother Lillian Somers Father Walter Somers, Brothers Alex Somers, Chris Somers and Scott Somers.
