Doreen Anne (Smith) Fischer, 91, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2024, at The Guardian, Lake Charles, Louisiana, in the care of Brighton Bridge Hospice. She was born on December 26, 1932, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is survived by her children, Alan Fischer, Joyce Fischer, Peter Fischer and companion Krystal Ellender, Eric Fischer and wife Katherine (Mitchell) Fischer, Nancy Fischer, Linda Fischer, 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Doreen was predeceased by her beloved husband of 62 years, Robert L. Fischer; her parents, Matthew Smith and Anna (Walsh) Smith; and her siblings, Richard Smith and Donald Smith.
Doreen graduated from John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls High School in 1950, Philadelphia General Hospital School of Nursing in 1953, was married that same year and moved to New Jersey, where she started raising a family. Eventually moving to the Lake Charles area in 1977, Doreen spent many years working as a registered nurse specializing in gerontology at West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital. She was active in the community and was a long time member of the Women’s Club of Sulphur, the Ladies of La Salette, and other community and church groups. After retirement, she enjoyed traveling and especially going on cruises with her husband. She was also a member of the Silver Strings Band for many years and often entertained residents at local nursing homes. Doreen attended and later taught painting classes and loved to fill the house with her beautiful creations. Being well versed in many types of needle craft, she created an endless stream of sweaters, shawls and doilies of amazing quality and beauty. She would be eager to teach anyone who expressed an interest and always valued creativity above all. She was an avid reader and also lead a bible discussion group at Stonebridge Place, her assisted living facility of more than 7 years. In the course of time, Doreen came to treasure the simple moments of her life, like car rides, the beauty of nature, and enjoying lunch at a picnic table. She had a long and rewarding life and will be greatly missed.
