Doris Estelle Hawkins Shafer, 78, of Lake Charles passed away Monday, May 13, 2013 in a local healthcare facility.
Mrs. Shafer was born in Crystal Springs, MS, lived over thirty years in Anacoco, LA and has lived the past six years in Lake Charles. She was a Basketball player and graduate of Westlake High School. She was a gifted fishermen, enjoyed gardening, playing cards, bingo and working crossword, word search and Sudoku puzzles. She was also a talented handyman, as she could fix anything from clocks to appliances to cars. She was a sports fanatic, anxiously cheering on the Packers, Saints, Cubs and Lakers. Mrs. Shafer was a member of First Pentecostal Church of Anacoco where she was an active participant in church functions. She will be most remembered for her smile, baby blue eyes and kind heart to know her was to love her.
She leaves to cherish her memory, three daughters, Dorie Hayes and husband David, Sybil Landry and husband Bart and Kate Jordan and husband Kenneth, all of Lake Charles; three sons, John Shafer of Leesville, Robert Shafer and wife Line of Lafayette and Benjamin Shafer and wife Sabrina of Lake Charles; three sisters, Mary Ann Lack, Juanita Fontenot and Lonnie Meyers; twenty-one grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild and many nieces, nephews and others she called her children.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack N. Shafer; parents, Benjamin A., Leleia and Bessie Hawkins and two brothers, George and Thomas Hawkins.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Thursday, May 16, 2013 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Richard Partridge will officiate. Interment will follow in Magnolia Cemetery in Westlake. Visitation Wednesday will be from 11:00 AM until 9:00 PM and will continue Thursday from 10:00 AM until the time of service in the funeral home.
