Dorothy “Dot” Horn Sweeney, 84, died on Tuesday, September, 5, 2017 at her home in Lake Charles.
A lifelong resident of Lake Charles, Dot was a graduate of Central School and Lake Charles High School, and an alumna of Southwestern LA Institute (SLI) now ULL. She often spoke proudly of her years at Lake Charles High School and her four years in the Kiltie Drill Squad – her Junior and Senior years as a drummer. Dot was a former member of the Lake Charles Country Club and the Ladies Golf Association for over 40 years, serving as president in 1982. She was a member of St. Luke Simpson United Methodist Church. Our mother took great pride in her family, as she devoted her life and her love to her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children: son, Kenneth Wayne Sweeney and wife Carol of Lake Charles; daughters, Cherilyn Sweeney of Lake Charles and Gail Avanzato and husband David of Beaumont, TX; brother, Walter F. Horn, Jr. and wife Doris of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; her precious grandchildren, Ross Mouhot and wife Lindsay, Carrie LaFargue and husband Chase, Laura Beebe and husband Hunter, Scott Sweeney, Blair Sweeney, Jake Avanzato and Matt Avanzato; her great-grandchildren, Blaire Mouhot and Grayson LaFargue; and sister-in-law, Thelma Thibodeaux. She will also be remembered by many caring nieces, nephews and cousins.
Those who preceded her in death were her loving husband of sixty-three years, Kenneth Sells Sweeney; and her parents, Walter Horn, Sr. and Pauline Bradley Horn.
Her funeral service will be at 1:00 PM on Friday, September 8, 2017 at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. John Robert Black will officiate. Burial will follow in Consolata Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday from 11:00 AM until the start of the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Luke Simpson United Methodist Church, 1500 Country Club Road, Lake Charles, LA 70605 or Louisiana Methodist Children’s Home, 3029 N. Beglis Parkway, Sulphur, LA 70663.
The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to Brighton Bridge Hospice, Teresa Leger, and her caregivers for the loving care they provided to their mother.
