Douglas Lee Stevenson, 64, died on Friday, September 16, 2016 at his home in Sulphur, Louisiana.
Doug was born on March 9, 1952 in central Iowa where he grew up. He was drafted in the U.S. Army and served two years shortly after graduation from Kennedy High School. After discharge from the Army, he was accepted in to the diving program at Highline Community College in Seattle, Washington. Upon graduation, he began a diving career in the Gulf of Mexico for commercial dive companies. He continued work in this industry as a diver for sixteen years. He later became a Diving Superintendent specializing in saturation diving for American Oilfield Divers, Stolt International and Cal-Dive International and continued in that career working on the vessel, American Constitution, until his retirement in early 2014 due to his illness.
He had an outgoing, friendly personality, never met a stranger and enjoyed helping people. He was truly a friend to many. He liked traveling and had a passion for woodworking.
Doug is survived by his son, Justin (Genni) Stevenson and children, Sky and Jayden of Houston, Texas; companion, Georgie Welch and her son, Caleb Olbrych of Sulphur, Louisiana; brother, Bill (Judy) Stevenson; niece, Katrina (Phil) Fristad, all of Cedar Rapides, Iowa; nephew, Travis (Brandy) of Alburnett, Iowa; nephew, Chad (Jeannie) Gordon of Denver, Colorado; and numerous extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Shane Lee Stevenson; wife and mother of his children, Dianna Stevenson; parents, Richard and Esther Christopherson Stevenson; and sister, Jan Gordon.
His memorial celebration of life will be held at Johnson Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at 11:00 AM with visitation beginning at 8:00 AM until the start of the service.
