Douglas Mac Mccullor

November 28, 1942 — November 9, 2021

Douglas (Doug) Mac McCullor, 78, of Moss Bluff was called to continue his walk with the Lord on November 9, 2021 with his family at his side.  Doug lived his life with laughter, joy, wit, and most of all, his faith in Jesus Christ.  He was raised Baptist, and as an adult attended the Catholic Church, as he liked to say, “I’m Bathlic.”

Doug began his journey on November 28, 1942 in Vivian, LA as the fourth child to Vernel and Ocie “Inez” McCullor.

Early in his childhood, the family moved to Maplewood where Doug connected with and embraced being a “Maplewood kid” and enjoyed being a part of his community.  His fondest childhood memories included playing baseball and hitting a home run for the Maplewood No Sox team to win the 1955 ”Little League All-Stars” title; serving as Head Life Guard at Ward 4 Recreation Pool in Sulphur; his first job, having a paper route; his high school job, working at the local Piggly Wiggly; and faithfully attending Bible study as a Member of the Maplewood First Baptist Church, where he served 2 years as Summer Youth Director.   He continued service to the Maplewood and Sulphur communities in adulthood as a devoted educator, coach and principal of Maplewood Middle School, as a Maplewood Allstate Agent for a brief time, and serving a 1-year term as the District 5 Councilman for the City of Sulphur.

He was an alumnus of McNeese State University, earning a B.S. degree in Education in 1966, returning for a M. ED. in 1973, and completing his Master’s Degree plus 30 in 1979.  He proudly enlisted in the U. S. Marines Corp in 1962, completing his training with a meritorious promotion from Parris Island Marine Corp Boot Camp in South Carolina.   During his military service he received the Rifle Expert Badge, and ended his 6 years of service as a Sergeant E 5.

Doug had a calling to serve the youth through education, and he served with a heart of compassion, caring and understanding for the child and the parent.  As he stated, “I am an educator by choice and have a deep concern for children and education,” which he fulfilled in his nearly 50 years of service.  He began his career in December 1965 with a brief retirement in May,1986.  He returned to education in August, 1988 because he “missed the kids” and continued to work with children of all ages until May, 2015.  During these years, he touched the lives of countless children at the elementary, middle, high school and career entry levels. Many of his former students described him as fair, impartial, and good humored.

Doug will be remembered as a man with extraordinary talents, multisport athleticism, and uncanny wit, with artistic and musical abilities.

His daughters have fond memories of their father’s love of nature and as a deep thinker. His love of music spilled over into everyday life, and he expressed himself in that way often. His fascination with flying eventually led to him obtaining his pilot’s license and being able to fly with them. As young kids he fed their creative aspirations with painting and sharing his love of being silly and being the ultimate jokester. He guided in basketball, softball, track and golf skills, and spotted flip flops for gymnastics. He loved to fish for the big bass in a place he called “where he really wants to be,” out in the wild. He was the rock and showed the path to empathy, compassion and love of all people. He counseled “It’s more important to be pretty on the inside” as a way of encouraging the cultivation of inner (true) beauty. Most remarkable to his children, was the genuine interest their family took in welcoming people to their home, traveling and experiencing other cultures, which laid the pathway for their own journeys into the world and its many wonders. His daughters know that they could not have been more blessed to have him as their father.

Doug is survived by his wife of 25 years, Elizabeth Timpa McCullor, who saw Doug as her angel here on earth; his daughters Stephanie Anne McCullor, Jennifer Inez McCullor, Megan Elizabeth McCullor; his granddaughters, Ellen Louisa Marie Gowran and Dehlia Dupré Trainer; brother James McCullor (June), sister Pat Scofield; sisters-in-law Sue Thrash (Terry), Mary Montgomery (Mark), Ruth Planchard (Coy), brothers-in-law Richard Timpa (Mona), Joseph Timpa (Karren), Harry Broussard (Annette), and many loved nieces and nephews.

Doug is preceded in death by sister Betty Frederick, brother Richard McCullor, sister-in-law Jeanne ; brothers-in-law Charles Barker and John Scofield.

The family will welcome friends on Monday November 15, 2021 at University Baptist Church beginning at 4pm to 8pm.  Visitation will resume Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at 9:30am until time of service. Funeral services led by Pastor Jeremy Blocker will begin at 12pm with burial to follow Highland Memory Garden.

Pallbearers are Terry Thrash, Richard Timpa, Cary Sole, Harry “Butch” Broussard, Joseph Timpa, Michael Timpa, Brok Timpa. Honorary pallbearers are Scott McCullor and Rick McCullor.

Doug was blessed to have been cared for in his home by Amy Abshire, Brenda Rosteet, and Ashley Guidry.  He is now resting in his Father’s arms, and as he would often say, “The best is yet to come.”
