"It is with heavy hearts that we announce the loss of our loved one...Dr. Glenn W. Cobb". Dr. Glenn W. Cobb, 76, of Lake Charles passed away Tuesday, October 29, 2013 in a local healthcare facility. Dr. Cobb was a native of Jonesboro, LA. After graduating from Jonesboro-Hodge High School in 1954, he attended Louisiana Tech University where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Botany in 1958 and married his college sweetheart, Patsy Jean King. They moved to Indiana where Dr. Cobb earned his Master of Science degree in Plant Pathology in 1961 and his Ph. D in Plant Morphogenesis from Purdue University in 1962. Dr. Cobb then moved to Nacogdoches, TX where he taught at Stephen F. Austin State University until 1965. Dr. Cobb moved to Lake Charles with his family in 1965 and joined the faculty of McNeese State University and served as a Professor of Botany until his retirement in 2008. During his 43 year teaching tenure at McNeese, Dr. Cobb touched the lives of thousands of students, many of whom are still very close friends of the family even today. Dr. Cobb served as President of the Louisiana Academy of Sciences and the Louisiana Association of Plant Pathologists and Nematologists. Dr. Cobb was the founder and a Board member of the Southwest Louisiana Archeological Society. Dr. Cobb was certified by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry in several areas and was listed in numerous publications. Dr. Cobb served as a consultant for the Poison Control Center, the Calcasieu Parish School Board and numerous area citizens. Dr. Cobb also co-authored a Botany book, was a charter member of the McNeese Kiwanis Club, served as a judge at numerous regional science fairs and gave countless presentations at meetings of professional organizations, schools and Boy Scout functions. Dr. Cobb earned his Boy Scout Eagle Scout rank in 1952 and later received his Vigil Honor in the Order of the Arrow in 1956. Dr. Cobb proudly served his country by enlisting in the United States Naval Reserves in 1955. Dr. Cobb continued his service to his country until being Honorably Discharged in 1963 as a top secret security communications specialist. Dr. Cobb deeply loved his wife of 55 years, Patsy King Cobb of Lake Charles; his two children, Brenda Cobb Hoffman and husband Lindy and Ron Cobb and wife Mary Jo, all of Lake Charles; three grandchildren, Brent Hoffman, Alicia Hoffman Precht and Emily Cobb and his three great grandchildren, Addisyn and Avery Hoffman and Blakely Precht. Dr. Cobb loved to visit with friends, garden, fish, hunt and collect various items. Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM Friday, November 01, 2013 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Jack O'Dell will officiate. Interment will follow in Prien Memorial Park. Visitation Thursday will be from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM and will continue Friday from 9:00 AM until the time of service in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made in Dr. Cobb's memory to St. Luke-Simpson United Methodist Church, 1500 Country Club Road, Lake Charles, LA.
