Celebration of Life Services for Dr. J. Dwayne Helms, 69, husband of Stacy Hill Helms passed away July 3, 2016 in his residence with his loved ones after a short, hard-fought battle with cancer.
Dr. Helms was born on January 12, 1947 in Lake Charles, Louisiana and was raised in Sweetlake/Bell City area. Dr. Helms was a proud member of the LaGrange High Gators’ Football team and graduated with the Class of ’65. Dr. Helms went on to Graduate from McNeese State University and LSU Medical School. Dwayne was a member of the Louisiana Medical association for over 40 years. He began his practice in New Iberia, then to the New Orleans area and in the late 1980’s to Texas where he met his wife, Stacy. In the early 90’s he returned to his roots in southwest Louisiana and dedicated the next 40 years of medical practice at West Cal- Cam Hospital and private practice until retirement. He was a member of Faith Temple Church in Sulphur. Dr. Helms finished his career working for the State of LA at Angola State Prison where he found these years to be the most rewarding. He enjoyed hunting, fishing offshore, joking around, music, and being with people. He also enjoyed being outdoors, working on his equipment, and spending numerous hours at his hunting camp with Zach and his friends.
Dr. Helms loved his life, because he was doing what he was called to do. He was very compassionate, humble, loved his family, and lived life to the fullest and had no regrets.
Dr. Helms is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Stacy Helms of Sulphur; his son, Zach Helms of Sulphur; daughter, Ashley Cahanin and husband Cody, their children, Adalynn, Cayson, and Cutler all of Lake Charles; daughter, Kandra Dietiker of Sulphur; daughter, Jamie Paul and husband Dustin and their children, Ainsley, Abigail, and Asher all of New Mexico; his brother, Edmund Helms of Sweetlake; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edmond “Bully” and Darles B. Helms of Sweetlake.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 7, 2016 at 11 A.M. at Faith Temple Church in Sulphur, 1200 Patton St., Sulphur, LA with Pastor Marcus Wade and Pastor Jeffery Ralston officiating. Burial will be in Mimosa Pines Cemetery in Carlyss under direction of Johnson and Robison Funeral Home. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 6, 2016 from 4-8 P.M. at Faith Temple Church and will resume on Thursday, July 7, 2016 at 9 A.M. until time of the service.
