Dr. LeeRoy (L. R.) Joseph Savoie departed this life on Sunday, Dec. 24, 2017, after a brief illness. He was born 13 February 1924 in Cankton, Louisiana, the son of Adolph L. Savoie and Una Marie Hernandez Savoie. He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and one great-grand-daughter.
Served four years in Army Air Corps as Bombardier on B-24 heavy bomber in Pacific theater eventually becoming squadron adjutant, then commander.
Lee was Senior Class President at Sunset High School. He attended his Freshman year at Southwest Louisiana in Lafayette, and then 2 years at the University of California at Berkeley. He finished his schooling at the Chicago College of Optometry with BS and OD degrees. He practiced optometry in Lake Charles from 1951 until 2010.
Lee was active in community throughout his life. He served as Commander of the Air Force Association Squadron, Chairman of SW Zone of Louisiana Optometric Association, President of Civitan Club, President of Interclub Council, President of the SW Louisiana Rose Society and worked with or on Calcasieu Association for Retarded Citizens, divorce reform legislation and Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
Lee is survived by two sons, Spencer & Joel, four grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4:00 PM unitl 7:00 PM on Thursday December 28 with a scripture service to be at 6:00 PM at Johnson Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be at 10:00 AM on Friday at the Johnson Funeral Home. Burial, with Military Honors, will be at 3:00 PM at St. Charles Cemetery in Grand Coteau.
