A memorial service for Walter Clarence Hughes, 82, will be held March 22, 2014, 2 PM at the First Baptist Church in Hornbeck, LA. He departed this life to be with Jesus, March 13, 2014 at 9 PM. Bro. Jack Bell will officiate. Arrangements were entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home. Clarence was born in Hornbeck, LA, December 18, 1931 and graduated from Hornbeck High in 1950. He attended Northwestern State College where he obtained a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. He taught ½ year at Westlake High before entering the Army for two years where he attained the rank of Captain. Afterwards he settled in the Shreveport area and taught at Blanchard Junior High for ten years. During this time he obtained a Master's degree in administration from Stephen F. Austin University. He also completed a doctorate degree in Counseling & Guidance at the University of Arkansas. Clarence was employed at McNeese State University from 1966-1989 serving in various administrative positions and as a professor in the department of psychology. He retired from McNeese and after a year of leisure was called to serve Sowela Technical Community College as an administrator from 1990-2009. In recent years he was spending most of his time in Hornbeck where he was known as "WC". At their place in Hornbeck he enjoyed finally being retired so he could play in his shop and on his backhoe and bulldozer. His greatest enjoyment was returning to the pleasures of a small-town environment and adding his singing and worship voice to those of the First Baptist church. He was preceded in death by parents, William Benjamin and Mary Ella Hughes; twin brother, Philip Murry Hughes; brother; George Benjamin Hughes; and sisters, Zelia Elizabeth Ferguson, Gladys Lola Davenport, Mary Louise Hughes, and Mamie Beatrice Evonne Beebe. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette; daughter, Rebecca Ann "Becky" Hughes and Alan B. Dewey, partner, of Lake Charles and daughter, Belinda Yvonne Hughes of Hornbeck; sister, Lillie Wilmuth Seagrave of Hornbeck. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Hornbeck, LA.
