Edward Ivan Mccreedy

Edward Ivan "Ed" McCreedy, 75, passed away in his Lake Charles home surrounded by loved ones on Saturday, December 7th, 2013. Born December 6, 1938 in Iowa City, IA, he and his family moved to Biloxi, MS after World War II. He attended Biloxi High School where he played baseball and football and was named All-Star, All-State, All-Southern, All-Big Eight, and All-American (honorable mention). He lettered three years each in track, baseball, and football. In 1960 he was honored with the Outstanding Biloxi Athlete award. While attending Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Ed earned his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry and zoology and played football from 1958 to 1960. Ed was a member of the White Team in 1958 when the LSU Tigers won their first National Championship. Ed married his wife, Marie, in 1967, and together they lived in Dayton, OH, Houma, and New Orleans before settling in Lake Charles with their children in 1972. Ed retired from Ashland (previously Olin) as a district sales manager of the Water Division. He embraced the local culture and developed his talent for cooking gourmet cuisine. Ed was involved with the Ulster Project as well as many international student exchange programs. Ed was a founding board member of the LSU Charles McClendon Scholarship program, a board member of the Lake Charles Ballet Society, and a charter member and board member of the Krewe of Barataria in Lake Charles. In 1985, he was inducted into the Biloxi Hall of Fame. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Marie; his children and their spouses, Catherine Howard (Byron) of Dallas, TX, Margaret Benoit (Kevin) and children Maddie, Michael, and Sam, Elizabeth Richards (Guy) and children John and Abby, Charles McCreedy of Bossier City, LA, and Erica McCreedy; sister, Janet Neugebauer of Lubbock, TX, brother William McCreedy (Carol Ann) of McHenry, MS; and nine nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ivan and Lela McCreedy, and his sister, Dr. Patricia McCreedy. A memorial service, led by long-time friend Monsignor Robert Massett, will be held at 11 a.m. following a visitation at 10 a.m. at Johnson's Funeral Home on Monday, December 16th. In his memory, the family requests donations be made to the LSU Charles McClendon Foundation Scholarship Fund at 15321 Honors Court Drive, Baton Rouge, LA 70810 or to a charity of your choice. The family wishes to give sincere thanks to Heart of Hospice, in particular, Patra and Carolyn.
