Elphie M. Babineaux, 95, of Lake Charles, went to be with her Lord on January 2, 2012.
Elphie was born in Mere, La., and lived in Lake Charles most of her life. She was a graduate of LaGrange Senior High School and Charity Hospital School of Nursing in New Orleans. After graduation from nursing school Miss Babineaux enlisted in the United States Army and served as a Second Lieutenant and a registered nurse
in the Women's Army Corp during World War II.
After her discharge from the Army, Elphie returned to Lake Charles to become the first plant nurse at PPG Industries where she worked for twenty-eight years. She also worked as a part-time operating room nurse at St. Patrick Hospital.
Elphie was a member of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church where she was a member of the Ladies Altar Society and also a member of the Catholic Daughters at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. She was also a Pink Lady at St. Patrick Hospital for many years.
She is survived by six nieces and nephews who were privileged to know and love her, Ted Babineaux and his wife, Lauren of Lake Charles, Harriet B. Sole and her husband Steve of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Clare Delafield of Lake Charles, Lawrence Babineaux and his wife Sheila of Lake Charles, Mary LeRibeus of Houston, and Jay Delafield and his wife Brenda of Ragley. She is also survived by numerous great nephews and nieces.
Her parents Theodore and Ella Miller Babineaux and her brothers and sisters, Lawrence, Alex, Sally, Lydia and Linus Babineaux, preceded her in death.
Funeral services for Elphie will be at 11:00 AM Thursday, January 5, 2012 at Our Lady Queen of Heaven. The Revs. Keith Pellerin and T. L. Herlong will officiate. Burial will be in Consolata Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 3:00 PM until 9:00 PM on Wednesday at the funeral home. A roasary will be recited at 6:30 PM Wednesday night and the funeral home. Visitation on Thursday will be from 8:00 AM until 10:45 at the funeral home.
The family wishes to express its sincere gratitude to JoAnn Niles, the staff of Villa Maria Retirement Center and to the physicians, staff and administration of Lake Charles Memorial Hospital.
