Ernestine Joy Silcott Hughes, 85, passed away peacefully December 17, 2011 at her son's home in Lafayette. She was a native of Choupique, Louisiana and a resident of Lake Charles.
Joy was Co-Valedictorian of the Sulphur High School Class of 1943, a Master Duplicate Bridge player, and a world traveler.
Joy was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and June Silcott, her adoptive father, Ernest Barfield, and her son, Tod Silcott Hughes.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Al A. Hughes; her son John Hatch Hughes and his wife Helen; her son Matthew Ernest Hughes and his wife Debbie; her daughter-in-law Beverly Rider and her husband Gary; her grandchildren Marie Hughes Mattox and her husband David, Shane Hughes, Sarah Hughes Boyd, step granddaughter Leah DuBois, Dr. Stephanie Hughes, Jennifer Hughes, Laura Hughes Escandon and her husband Diego, John Hughes II, Hope Hughes, Claire Hughes, Hannah Hughes and Jacob Hughes; her great grandchildren McKenna Mattox, Keegan Mattox, Camren Hughes, Kaylee Boyd, Bailee Louviere, and Jack Hughes Escandon; and her sister, Dr. Ernestine June Silcott.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nurses of Hospice Compassus for their loving care.
Joy chose cremation and private interment in the columbarium of Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Lake Charles where she was a member for over 55 years.
