Ethel Emeline Mciver Glenn

Ethel Emeline McIver Glenn was born October 10, 1921, in South Jacksonville, Florida, and left her earthly home on Tuesday, June 21, 2011, to spend a glorious eternity with her Heavenly Father, the Lord Jesus Christ and Bob (Robert Carson Glenn, Sr), her devoted husband for 60 years. She was 89 years old.

She's been a memorable teacher and life-long educator -- receiving many teaching awards. Ethel was a dedicated wife ("til death do us part"), a friend, a mother, a grandmother, and a great-grandmother. She also was an avid bridge player; she won "high" the day before the stroke. Her sons Robert and Dale remember hiding under the bridge tables during bridge parties in their Orchid Street house. When caught, they were sent out of the room along with some of the candies from the tables. Ethel will be greatly missed by family and friends and she will continue to be greatly loved.

She was the next to last survivor of her generation in our family. That honor is now held by her sister-in-law, Shirley McIver. She was Aunt Ethel to many nieces and nephews: Patti, daughter of her brother, Joe McIver; Barbara, Shirley, Raymond, Robbie, Billie, and Ronnie, Harry, Joyce Ann who were daughters and spouses, sons and spouses of Bob's brothers and sisters. Ethel was preceded in death by her mother, Leacy Ethel Harris McIver; her father, Joseph Bachman McIver; her brother, Joseph Bachman McIver, Jr.; and her loving husband, Robert "Bob" Carson Glenn, Sr.

Ethel is survived by sons Dr. Robert (Bobby) Carson Glenn, Jr. and his wife Elaine of Lago Vista, Texas, and Dale Joseph (Joe) Glenn of Sacramento, California; by grandsons Dale Christian Glenn of Lake Charles, Roger Christopher Glenn and his wife Karly of Austin, Texas, and Robin Casey Glenn of Round Rock, Texas; and by four great-grandchildren.

Ethel graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in Miami, Florida, and graduated in 3 1/2 years from the University of Miami in 1943. She earned a Masters of Education from McNeese State University in 1963 and a Specialist in Reading. After marrying Robert "Bob" Glenn in 1943, she moved with him to North Charleston, South Carolina and to La Jolla, California where she worked for a period during WWII at Ryan Aircraft in San Diego, California. They moved back to Charleston, SC, where she took an extension course at the Citadel, and eventually they located in Lake Charles, Louisiana, in 1955 just prior to Hurricane Audrey.

Ethel taught every elementary grade during her 40 year span of teaching with tenures in La Jolla, California; in Charleston, South Carolina; and in Lake Charles, Louisiana at Moss Bluff Elementary, Oak Park Elementary, Watkins Elementary, and College Oaks where she trained student teachers. Ethel was creative in her teaching as demonstrated by the field trips to Fort Sumter, train rides, and for her family, a vacation in Washington, D.C. Ethel was active in many educational organizations. She was a Life Member of the National Educational Association (NEA); served as District VII representative to the Teacher Retirement Board for 7 years; was a member of the AAUW (American Association of University Women); was president of Delta Kappa Gamma; and president of P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) Chapter AR. She was also a member of Kappa Kappa Iota; a member of P.E.O. Chapter AD; member of numerous bridge clubs, and P.T.A.s (Parent-Teacher Association). She was a very active member of the Oak Park United Methodist Church which closed in 2010, and later the First United Methodist Church. At Oak Park United Methodist Church she was a past president of the United Methodist Women, a member of the Administrative Board, a member of the church choir, and an honorary Life Member of the W.S.C.S. (Women's Society of Christian Service).

Her family and friends remember her creativity in knitting and cooking; her humor such as, "Young at heart. Slightly older in other places." found on a sign in her kitchen; her sewing and knitting for others; and her generosity in giving to organizations and friends in need. Many people have received blessings from her. Her cooking has been fantastic, and she has coordinated the compilation of many Church Cookbooks. Check DrBob81 on Face Book for some of her recipes.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, June 24, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church. Rev. Weldon Bares and Rev. Roger Templeton will officiate. Burial will be at Highland Memory Garden Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM in the funeral home. Visitation will continue on Friday from 12:00 noon until time of services in the church.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Edward Hebert; the Southern Home Health nursing and physical therapy staff; the Southern Care Hospice staff including Rosalynn Thyssen, Debbie Comeaux, Katie Myers, Marilyn Chambers, Pastor Marvin Durgan, and Chasity Kee; the Home Instead staff especially Kolicia Carr and Hilda Ezell, for their loving kindness.
