Eugene "Gene" H. Ammons

Eugene "Gene" H. Ammons, a beloved husband, devoted father, and accomplished Mechanical Engineer, peacefully passed away on July 6, 2023, at the age of 88.

He was born on November 26, 1934, in Robeline, Louisiana to Wiley and Liller Mae Ammons, and was the ninth of 10 children. Gene proudly graduated from Louisiana Tech University, where his passion for engineering took place. His remarkable career spanned 60 years, during which he made significant contributions to the field. He held licenses in both Louisiana and Texas and successfully completed numerous projects in both states. 

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Gene found joy in his garden and the act of growing vegetables for his family to enjoy. He also cherished frequent trips to Branson, MO, where he immersed himself in lively shows, music, and the natural beauty of the Ozark Mountains. 

Gene is survived by his loving wife and caregiver, Dorothy Ammons, his sister Ellen Hostetler (Frank) of Channelview, TX, and his three children: Terry Ammons (Marti) of Atlanta, Pam Johnson (Scott) of Atlanta, and Todd Ammons (Christy) of Lake Charles. He is also survived by his three step-children: Cindy Stroud of Lake Charles, Randy Benevage (Sheila) of Covington, and Rusty Benevage (Deidra) of Lake Charles. 

Gene's love extended to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought him immeasurable happiness. He leaves behind 16 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, who will forever cherish the memories they shared with him. 

In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his eight siblings and his cherished great-grandson, Layton Cole Stroud, who held a special place in his heart. 

Gene will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His professional accomplishments and dedication to his loved ones will leave an enduring impact on the lives he touched. 

A funeral service to honor Gene's life will be held on Sunday, July 9, 2023 at 2:00 PM in the Johnson Funeral Home chapel with Pastor John Hoffpauir officiating. Visitation will be held at 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Saturday, July 8.  Visitation will continue on Sunday from 12:00 PM util the start of the service.  Following the service on Sunday, a graveside ceremony will take place at Consolota Cemetery.
