Evelyn Batey Sigmund

January 19, 1924 — September 21, 2024

Evelyn Morton Batey Sigmund, age 100 years and 8 months, of Lake Charles, stepped into eternity on September 21, 2024. She was born January 19, 1924 near Smyrna, Tennessee to Maggie Jordan Batey and James Benjamin Batey, Sr.

Preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Harold Raymond Sigmund, Sr; parents; son, Harold Raymond Sigmund, Jr. sisters, Margaret Batey, Ann Batey Whitley, Sue Batey Baker, and brothers, James Benjamin Batey, Jr. and Thomas Elliot Batey,

She is survived by sons James Sigmund and his wife Martha of Frisco, Texas and John Sigmund and his wife Debra of Lake Charles, Louisiana; grandsons Jeffrey Sigmund of Sierra Vista, Arizona, Robert Sigmund and his wife Carrie of McKinney, Texas, David Sigmund of North Little Rock, Arkansas and Kenneth Sigmund and his wife Hannah of Sulphur, Louisiana, great grandchildren Nathan Sigmund and Daphne Sigmund of McKinney, Texas and sister-in-law, Bonnie Tucker Batey of Maryville Tennessee; and many cherished nieces, nephews and cousins.

Evelyn attended schools in Smyrna, TN and graduated from Smyrna High School. She was a graduate of David Lipscomb College in Nashville, TN. Evelyn worked at the Cain Sloan Photo Studio in Nashville. She married Harold Sigmund in August of 1944. After living in Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville, and Enid, Oklahoma she moved to Lake Charles, in 1963 where Harold was appointed Lake Charles chief controller by the Federal Aviation Administration. Evelyn worked at Moss Regional Hospital and later at the Calcasieu Parish Health Unit. Evelyn was a member of Enterprise Boulevard Church of Christ where she served as a Sunday school teacher and helper for many years. She was active in the Ladies’ Bible Class as well as the 39er’s group and the benevolent ministry.

Evelyn possessed the gifts of friendship, encouragement and hospitality. She made lasting relationships wherever she lived.

A very special thanks to Evelyn’s sitters, Shirley Gobert and Virgie Lyons, who tirelessly have cared for her and have become dear to her for the past two and one-half years. Also much thanks to Amedisys Hospice for their help.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Church Of Christ, 2801 Enterprise Blvd, Lake Charles, LA 70601, with Jeremy Folding officiating. Visitation will be the same day from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the church, with private interment at Consolata Cemetery.
