Genevieve Harrison Wimberly

September 21, 1917 — June 26, 2012

Genevieve Harrison Wimberly passed peacefully at her home with her children on Tuesday morning, June 26, 2012. Born on Live Wire Ranch in Orange, Texas, on September 21, 1917, she was one of the few remaining of her generation who lived through the Great Depression, two World Wars, the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, doubling of the US population, and men walking on the moon. Genevieve was from pioneer stock and independent in spirit. In 1940, she moved to Sulphur with her husband Howard Victor Wimberly. Gen was a member of Henning Memorial United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Sulphur Civic Club, where she helped establish the Senior Citizen Center, and a charter member of the Sulphur Garden Club, where she served as President for two terms and held many other offices. She was also a past President of the Area Council of State Federated Garden Clubs. As a floral designer, she won many awards during her lifetime. She was also a past member of the Daylily Society, and the Southwest Orchid Society. As a Pink Lady at WCCH, she was chairwoman of the Hospital Meditation Garden for patients and their families. Genevieve was preceded in death by Howard Victor Wimberly, her husband of 46 years, and six sisters and two brothers. She is survived by her son, Howard Victor Wimberly, Jr. and partner, Eugene Anthony Tuckwiller, III; daughters Rebecca Anne Whitworth, and Janet Leah and her husband Manfred Behling. Grandchildren include Terri Whitworth and husband Duane Carter, Charles Whitworth and wife Sharon, and Jacob Behling. Genevieve was also blessed with five great grandchildren: Charles Connor and Mikala Whitworth, and Asher, Asa, and Katie Carter. Surviving nephews and nieces include Joseph, Wallace, and Walter Bradford; Floyd Sabins; and Ted and Anne Keady. Visitation will be held in the sanctuary of Henning Memorial United Methodist Church on Friday, June 29th, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Family and friends will gather at 8:45 a.m. Saturday, June 30, 2012 for a brief service of interment at Mimosa Pines Cemetery in Carlyss. Following the interment, a memorial and celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 AM, with Rev. Doug Cain officiating at the church. A reception will be held afterwards in Key Hall. Those of you who knew Gen would understand that she would want this to be a colorful and joyous occasion. She was a wonderful friend to many and truly embraced the phrase joie de vivre. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Elderberries and to Friendship Meals of Henning Memorial United Methodist Church, or to West Cal/Cam Hospital Foundation in memory of Genevieve Wimberly for maintenance of the Mediation Garden.
