George Charles Newman, 69, of Lake Charles, LA died at 6:12 AM on Sunday, November 10, 2013 in a local hospital. Mr. Newman was born June 28, 1944 in Marthaville, LA to L.C. Newman and Jo Evelyn Durr Newman. He lived in Lake Charles since he was 10 years old, was a 1962 graduate of LaGrange High School, and graduated from McNeese State University in ROTC as a business major. He also graduated with a MBS in 1970 after his service in the U.S. Army, where he was honorably discharged on January 20, 1967. While serving in the Army, he was stationed near the demilitarized zone in Korea. Mr. Newman worked as a general adjuster for over twenty-five years for GAB Business Services and then as a worker's compensation adjuster for over ten years for the Calcasieu Parish School Board until his retirement on August 1, 2013. George loved gardening and planted many trees in his yard. He loved fishing and hunting and playing with his grandchildren. He was a kind, loving person, a devoted family man, an honest and conscientious employee, and a dedicated, loyal friend. He is survived by his wife of forty-two years, Jan Rider Newman; son, Paul Andrew Newman of Austin, TX (m. Rachel); grandchildren, Clara Austin Newman and Delia June Newman of Austin, TX; brothers, James Newman (m. Gloria) and Dennis Newman (m. Lynn) of Lake Charles; and mother-in-law, Ida Rider of Lake Charles. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Harry Newman. His funeral service will be held at 11:30 AM on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Deacon Glenn Viau will officiate. Graveside service will be at 2:30 PM on Tuesday at St. Augustine Catholic Church Cemetery in Basile, LA. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Monday from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM with a rosary at 6:00 PM. Visitation will continue on Tuesday from 8:00 AM until the start of the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Pancreatic Cancer Research. The family would like to express a special word of thanks to the staff of the Oncology (2nd) floor at LCMH, Dr. Michael Broussard and his nurse, Melissa, the nursing staff in the Chemo Bay, and Heart of Hospice.
