George Paul Sonnier

July 14, 1950 — March 7, 2023

George Paul Sonnier, 72, of Lake Charles died peacefully on Tuesday March 7, 2023 at a local care center.

George was born on July 14, 1950 in Biloxi, Mississippi.  George loved fishing, boating, cooking and enjoying good food.  He was a jack of all trades that could fix just about anything.  He wore many hats in his lifetime, but his most favorite, by far, was the one that said “Paw Paw”.  While he loved his family fiercely, his grandchildren were the lights of his life.  George never met a stranger, always had a big smile and a good joke to make you laugh. He loved seeing his family happy and worked tirelessly to ensure everyone had everything they needed and more.  He never lost his spirit for life or his love for his family, even when he was trapped in his body by this awful disease.  George retired from Citgo in 2015.

Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Heather Leigh Broussard and husband Rusty of Lake Charles and George Paul Sonnier, Jr. and wife Allison of Westlake; grandchildren, Jacob Sharpe, Travis Sharpe, Lora Sharpe, Cameron Broussard, Gavin Broussard all of Lake Charles and Drew Sonnier of Westlake; brothers, Tom Sonnier (Linda) of Nashville, Tennessee and Roy Sonnier of Lake Charles sisters, Alice Lockhart (Dwight), Patricia Greenlee (Michael), Mary “Teenie” May, Joan Woody all of Lake Charles, Rose Quebodeaux of Sulphur, Elizabeth “Lyz” Trahan of Vinton along with numerous nieces and nephews and family of the heart.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Bernice M. Sonnier and Allen J. Sonnier; mother-in-law, Dorothy Q. Caldwell and father-in-law, William G. Caldwell; brother, Allen A. Sonnier (Pete) and sister, Laura M. Webb.

Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Wednesday March 8, 2023 at Johnson Funeral Home in Lake Charles with a Rosary to be recited at 6:00 PM. Private family services will be held at a later date.

Honorary pallbearers are his six grandchildren Jacob Sharpe, Travis Sharpe, Lora Sharpe, Cameron Broussard, Gavin Broussard and Drew Sonnier.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Lake Charles Care Center and Heart of Hospice for the loving and compassionate care they gave George.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers to make a donation to the PSP and CBD Foundation (https://pspcbdfoundation.org) in George’s name.  George was diagnosed with Progressive-Supranuclear Palsy in 2019.
