Glenn H. Barnhill, 94, passed away on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at Rosewood Rehabilitation Facility.
Born in Marthaville, Louisiana, to Robert Franklin and Minnie Ola Ingram Barnhill, Glenn served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theatre aboard the destroyer, the USS Bassett. He and his shipmates assisted in the rescue of the servicemen who had been attacked while on the USS Indianapolis in the Philippine Sea in 1945.
In 1949 Glenn moved to Lake Charles with his wife, Jean Barnhill. He was the owner of Lake City Barber Shop until his retirement in 1997 at age 80. Lake City Barber Shop was a fixture in downtown Lake Charles for many years and a great meeting place. Glenn was loved and respected by his customers. He often said that he loved living and loved people. Lake City Barber Shop allowed Glenn to fulfill both joys.
Glenn enjoyed gardening, fishing and tinkering in his workshop. One of his greatest loves was his church, First Baptist Church of Lake Charles. He was a faithful member for over fifty years, serving as an usher, deacon, and Sunday School teacher. He was a gentle, kind and faithful man of God. He was always loving and always loved, particularly by his family, as well as by those others who were blessed to know him.
Those left to cherish his memory are his two daughters, Vicki Barnhill of Houston and Micki Jerez and husband Rick of Lake Charles; two granddaughters, Lucy and Laura Cavys; two sisters, Delourse Veillon of Lake Charles and Fay Parks of Marthaville. His wife of 56 years, Jean Watts Barnhill, preceded him in death in 2004.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at Johnson Funeral Home. Pastor Jerry Snider will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Glenn's daughters would like to especially express their love and grateful appreciation to Josephine Williams, Coco Harmon, and Wanda Guillory for the gentle and compassionate love and care they gave to their beloved dad through his last days.
The world was a better place with Glenn Barnhill in it. He will be missed by his family and the many people whose lives he touched.
