Gussie Mae Reed Fontenot, 87, of Lake Charles, LA died at 12:35 AM on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 in her residence. Mrs. Fontenot was born September 7, 1926 in Deralde, LA and has lived in Lake Charles since 1945. She was a member of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church and was always there to take care of family members or friends in need. Maw maw G.G., as she was affectionately called by her beloved grandchildren, lived life to the fullest. She especially loved the time she and Dallas spent together at their camp in Big Lake cooking and playing Bouree with family and friends. Her favorite pastime was cooking, baking, and crocheting with her dear friends, Bessie Ruley and Madeline "Bubs" Rougeau. Mrs. Fontenot also enjoyed dancing and hunting. She could frequently be seen in her hunting blinds up until her 80's. Mrs. Fontenot is survived by her daughters, Janis Reed and husband Dean and Susan Fontenot Vezinat and husband Paul, all of Lake Charles; son, Karl Kemper Fontenot and wife Barbara of Victoria, TX; brother, Roland Reed and wife Betty of Lake Charles; grandchildren, Kevin Fontenot and wife Kelly, Monica Silver and husband Earl, Clint Fontenot, and Madelyn Scagliotti Guidry and husband Lee; and great-grandchildren, Daniel Silver, Hayley, Riley and Autumn Guidry, and Collin and Cara Fontenot. She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-four years, Dallas "Dowell" Joseph Fontenot; parents, Wilford and Edna Reed.; and her beloved dog, Chi Chi. Her funeral service will be held at 3:30 PM on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Father John Huckaby will officiate and her granddaughters, Monica Silver and Madelyn Guidry, will serve as readers. Burial will follow in Consolata Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Saturday from 9:00 AM until the start of the service with a rosary and scripture service at 1:00 PM. Pallbearers for the service will be Kevin Fontenot, Clint Fontenot, Earl Silver, James Israel, Lee Guidry, and Ruben Reed. The family would like to express a special word of thanks to her caregiver, Georgianna McGee, Heart of Hospice, and Dr. Robin Rougeau for the attention shown to their mother.
