Harvey Stewart Varnum

Harvey Stewart Varnum “Bud”, 92, passed away on October 31, 2021, at his home in Carlyss, LA, with his family at his side.

He was born in Mineola, NY to Russell and Margaret Varnum. Bud was a Korean War Veteran, proudly serving in the United States Air Force. While in the Air Force he met his bride. They moved to Medford, Long Island, NY where they raised their family. Bud worked for the Long Island Railroad as a trainman/conductor. After retiring from the railroad, they moved to Bancroft, LA where they purchased a farm.  Bud was a devout Christian and loved his God and his Savior, Jesus. He loved singing hymns and going to church. He enjoyed farming and anything agricultural. Bud was a great storyteller, sharing his many experiences and travels he had during his adventurous life. Bud loved to socialize and made many friends. Most recently, he was enjoying bingo at the senior center and going out to eat almost every day.  He enjoyed watching documentaries on TV, especially the history and nature channels.  Bud and his wife were avid travelers, RVing all over the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Sometimes they enjoyed cruises and just “hoteling it”.  

Those left to carry on his stories and legacy are his daughter, Valerie Ann Walker; grandchildren; great grandchildren; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends.  Bud is preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, JoAnn; sons, Roland David Varnum, and Russell Paul Varnum.

Russell’s memorial service had been postponed due to government mandates. JoAnn’s service was postponed due to Bud becoming gravely ill. Fortunately, Bud recovered, and the Lord gave his family and friends 8 more wonderful months with Bud here on this earth.

Please join us for a memorial service in honor of Harvey “Bud” Varnum, his wife, JoAnn Varnum and their son, Russell Varnum at Maplewood Church of Christ in Sulphur at 1pm, Saturday, November 20, 2021.  Bud’s friend, Pastor Brian Spicer, will officiate.  Food and Fellowship will follow.
